Kevin Costner’s Colorado ranch offers a glimpse of luxury mountain living on a scale few private homes can match. Located near Aspen, Dunbar Ranch spans 160 acres and brings together three residences, a lake house and a river house across one sprawling property.
The estate combines rustic interiors with mountain views, a private lake, a baseball field and outdoor amenities designed for year-round recreation. Purchased in 2000, the ranch has also played a personal role in Costner’s life, hosting his 2004 wedding to Christine Baumgartner. It has since attracted attention for its reported high-end holiday rental rates.
Dunbar Ranch began with a 160-acre purchase near Aspen in 2000
Costner reportedly purchased 160 acres near Aspen in 2000 for $30,000, according to published accounts of the estate.
The land gives the property considerable room to accommodate several buildings and recreational facilities without the residences feeling crowded together. Its proximity to downtown Aspen also places the secluded retreat within reach of the town's shops, restaurants and other amenities. The name Dunbar Ranch comes from Lieutenant John Dunbar, Costner's character in the 1990 film ‘Dances with Wolves’. The actor's later portrayal of ranch owner John Dutton in Yellowstone brought renewed attention to his association with the American West, though his Colorado estate predates that television role by many years.
Costner's ownership of the property reflects a longstanding interest in maintaining a substantial private retreat in the mountains rather than a home built around his screen career.
Three residences give the ranch a different layout
The estate's defining feature is its collection of three residences, each offering a different setting within the same property. The main house is the largest of the homes described in published accounts, with 12 bedrooms and eight bathrooms across nearly 6,000 square feet.
Its size makes it suitable for hosting extended family groups and guests, while the additional buildings provide alternatives to staying in the principal residence. The lake house and river house give the compound a more varied character than a conventional luxury ranch centred on one large building. The lake house has a distinctly rustic interior, with exposed timber, a prominent antler chandelier and a white brick fireplace forming part of its cabin-style design.
The main residence and river house take a different approach, using vaulted ceilings, white-painted wood panelling and floral wallpaper.
These interiors lean towards a lighter, more traditional country-house look, contrasting with the heavier materials found in the lake house.Having three residences on the same grounds also changes how the property can be used. Guests can occupy separate buildings while sharing the wider estate, rather than gathering in a single house throughout their stay.
A lake, a baseball field and space for outdoor activities
The residences account for only part of what Dunbar Ranch offers. The grounds include a large lake, a baseball field and a hill used for sledding in winter. Three hot tubs provide another leisure feature, making the property suited to visits across different seasons. Mountain views form part of the setting, while the acreage gives guests room to move between the buildings and outdoor facilities. The estate also has caretakers available around the clock to look after the grounds.
Maintaining a property of this scale involves more than preparing the houses for visitors, particularly when the landscape and outdoor amenities are used throughout the year. The arrangement helps support the ranch's dual role as Costner's private retreat and a property that has been offered to paying guests.
The ranch has also been used as a holiday rental
Costner has reportedly rented out Dunbar Ranch during the winter season, when he has spent more time at his home in Santa Barbara, California.
The property's size and collection of amenities make it an unusual rental option for groups seeking a private mountain stay. According to Architectural Digest reports, he listed its rental price at $36,000 per night in recent years, while earlier coverage described weekly rates that could reach $250,000 during the busiest periods.According to Architectural Digest reports, the estate can accommodate as many as 24 people.
With three residences available, the capacity is not confined to the bedrooms of the main house alone. The combination of separate living spaces, recreational facilities and a location close to Aspen helps explain its appeal to groups looking for more than a standard hotel or holiday home.
A personal milestone at Dunbar Ranch
The ranch has a place in Costner's personal history, too. He married Christine Baumgartner at the Aspen property in 2004, bringing family significance to an estate that has otherwise attracted attention for its size, setting and rental potential.
The grounds provided a private location for the ceremony, away from the more public surroundings associated with the actor's work.Costner continues to own the Colorado retreat, according to published reports. Yet the ranch should not be taken as proof that his real life mirrors the image of a seasoned cowboy he has played on screen. In a 2024 interview with The Talks, he described himself as an average rider and said he would not claim to be a cowboy. The distinction is a useful one: Dunbar Ranch may have the landscape and facilities associated with Western ranch life, but it remains a private property with its own history, shaped by family use, film-related associations and occasional stays by paying guests.
