Army football coach Jeff Monken doesn't believe there's any carryover from previous meetings, so he doesn't expect there will be any hangover from the Black Knights' last meeting with Tulsa, which hosts West Point on Friday night.
But to backtrack: On Sept. 22, 2025, Army held a 25-23 lead on visiting Tulsa with under two minutes to play and the ball at midfield. Monken decided it was best to bang out one more first down to make it impossible for the Golden Hurricane to counter. But Tulsa's defense stiffened and eventually turned away Army quarterback Cale Hellums on a fourth-down carry. Tulsa was 61 yards from goal with 1:36 to play.
Freshman quarterback Baylor Hayes completed one pass and running back Dominick Richardson churned out 37 yards on five runs, setting up a field goal from 27 yards and a 26-25 Tulsa victory, another one of five one-score losses suffered a year ago.
Fast forward to today: Richardson has moved on, but Hayes is back as a redshirt sophomore and the fourth-rated passer in the American Conference (134.9 efficiency rating). He's completed 62% of his throws, averaging 216 yards per game. Given Army's struggles in defending the pass, this could be troublesome.
Asked if there's revenge in mind, Monken dismissed the notion.
"That has nothing to do with winning," Monken said. "(Tulsa is) a different team; we're a different team. It's a different year. So it's just a game that we're trying to try to do our very best to prepare and try to win.
"The emotion of 'They beat u last year; we've got to get them back' ... emotion doesn't win; execution wins."
It's been a back-and-forth season for both clubs. Tulsa won its first three, lost its next three and is coming off a win against Rice. Army alternated wins and losses for four weeks, then won the last two against Tulane and Florida Atlantic.
In an odd twist, Army and Tulsa have met three times previous, and neither home team has produced a victory. Army won 49-7 in 2024, the team's first year in the American Conference.
