Kelvin Momo's new relationship is doing more than making headlines, it has cracked open a full-blown fashion debate on South African X, dragging his ex Babalwa M's wardrobe back into the spotlight.
The chatter erupted after X user @TheOGPurist_ posted photos of the amapiano producer and DJ's new partner, celebrating the pairing while taking a pointed dig at Babalwa M's much-mocked style. In a post that sent timelines into overdrive, @TheOGPurist_ wrote:
"I understand him, this one won't pull up wearing John Cena shorts to a date. 😭😭🤘🏾 Kelvin Momo upgraded. 😭🤘🏾"
The "John Cena Shorts" meme explained
For those unfamiliar with the joke, Babalwa M has faced persistent fashion criticism from online trolls for her casual streetwear choices. A particular pair of baggy cargo shorts, which fans christened "John Cena shorts," became a recurring meme across South African Twitter, following her far beyond the original post that spawned it. What started as a passing comment evolved into one of the more recognisable fashion gags in local amapiano culture.
The latest round of posts reignited that same conversation, with netizens flooding the quote-reposts with references to past wardrobe moments from music appearances and public outings.
Divided reactions on X
Not everyone was in agreement with the original poster's framing. While plenty of users piled on, others questioned whether publicly mocking an ex's clothing choices constituted anything more than cyberbullying dressed up as banter.
The replies ranged from cutting to contradictory:
@yonela2025:
"How can you date a DJ when you have two kids and just got divorced? She downgraded."
@iam_FortuneM:
"She doesn't dress well either. 🫠"
@TheyCallMeAldo:
"And she has the worst dress sense ever! 🤦🏽♀️"
Babalwa M teased a new song
Babalwa M shared a snippet of a new song that has fans paying close attention to the lyrics.
The preview arrived as her ex-Kelvin moved on with a new romance, adding fuel to speculation about the song's subject.
