A woman from the Kuki community was reportedly killed, and two others went missing following a gunfight between Kuki and Naga groups in Kamjong district, Manipur, on Thursday, amid renewed tensions along the Indo-Myanmar border.
According to reports, the incident took place at around 4 pm in a forested area between Phaikoh and Mulvailup villages, close to the international border; local Kuki organisations identified the deceased as Hatneikim Haokip, whose age could not be immediately confirmed. Her husband reportedly escaped unhurt, while two other Kuki-Zo civilians remain missing, the organisations claimed.
The Haokip and three others were travelling to purchase essential commodities for their families when they were allegedly attacked by suspected members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM). The allegation could not be independently verified.
The latest incident comes five days after two Tangkhul Naga village guards were shot dead in Ningchou Naga village on October 10. Police also reported the deaths of two Kuki civilians, including a 42-year-old woman, in crossfire involving armed militants and security forces on the same day.
Earlier, four Naga villagers were killed in an attack in Pilong village on September 25. The police FIR referred to suspected armed militants entering the village from the Indo-Myanmar border and opening fire.
Tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities have escalated since twin ambushes on May 13 killed four people, including three church leaders. The incidents triggered protests, shutdowns, hostage-taking and a blockade of the state's three national highways.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities erupted. The violence has left at least 260 people dead and displaced around 60,000, with communities largely separated in areas they dominate.
A new government was formed in February following nearly a year of President's Rule, with representation from the state's three major communities as part of efforts to restore stability.
