RI seeks Security Council, WHO posts to strengthen multilateralism

১৯/১০/২০২৬

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is seeking a U.N. Security Council seat and the WHO chief post as part of its commitment to strengthening the multilateral system, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha C. Nasir said on Monday.

In a speech before U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta, Arrmanatha said the roles were not merely titles but responsibilities to build trust and make the multilateral system stronger and more effective.

“They are a responsibility to build trust and build a stronger, more effective multilateral system,” Arrmanatha said.

Arrmanatha said Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy allowed the country to make its own decisions while contributing to international affairs.

A strong and resilient Indonesia could contribute more to peace and prosperity beyond its borders, he said, adding that a more resilient world would in turn strengthen Indonesia.

“That is the spirit we bring to the United Nations. We do not only come to take part, we come to bring ideas, people and solutions,” he added.

Arrmanatha said Indonesian peacekeepers had served under the U.N. flag since 1957. Indonesia had also championed the principles of an archipelagic state, including through the development of international maritime law and the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Indonesia has served four terms as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and contributed to various U.N. mechanisms, including the Peacebuilding Commission, he said.

The country currently serves on the U.N. Board of Auditors and holds the presidency of the U.N. Human Rights Council.

“For Indonesia, multilateralism is not about having a seat at the table. It is about what we can bring to the table. And we are not slowing down,” Arrmanatha said.
