Samsung SDI has signed an agreement to sponsor South Korea's national team at the International Chemistry Olympiad, expanding the Samsung Group's support for young science talent.
The battery-maker signed the agreement Thursday with the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity and the Korean Chemical Society at the Korea Science and Technology Center in southern Seoul.
The ceremony was attended by Samsung SDI People Team head Kim Hoon-kyu, foundation Chairman Jung Woo-sung and Korean Chemical Society President Geum Kyo-chang.
Starting in January, Samsung SDI will fund the team's selection, training and participation in the annual competition and provide additional scholarships to medal winners.
The International Chemistry Olympiad brings together high school students from around the world to compete in chemistry. Korea has participated since 1992, when the event was held in Pennsylvania.
The 59th edition will take place in Taipei, Taiwan, from July 19-28, 2027.
"We will continue investing in science and engineering talent through research funding and educational sponsorships," a Samsung SDI official said.
The sponsorship adds to Samsung Group's support for international science competitions. Samsung Electronics backs Korea's teams at the International Mathematical and Physics Olympiads, while Samsung Biologics and Samsung Bioepis sponsor the International Biology Olympiad delegation.
