Christopher Lloyd’s former Hollywood bungalow sells for $2.82m in just 12 days

Some houses are built to impress, while others tell a story that unfolds room by room. In Los Angeles, a Spanish-style bungalow once owned by Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd belongs firmly to the latter category. Blending Mediterranean influences, playful architectural details and traces of Hollywood history, the property has evolved from a modest 1920s residence into an unconventional compound.

Artist Diva Zappa bought the home for $2.55 million in 2022 and undertook an extensive restoration before selling it for $2.82 million after just 12 days on the market, states an online report by Homes.

A bungalow with a Hollywood past

According to Home, when Lloyd acquired the property in the 1980s, the original Spanish bungalow was a relatively modest two-bedroom, two-bathroom home. With architect Robert DeYoung, the actor expanded it into a more elaborate estate, adding a one-bedroom, one-bathroom guesthouse and transforming the outdoor space with a swimming pool and extensive hardscaping. The result was a distinctive mix of architectural influences, with adobe-inspired elements and flowing lines reminiscent of the work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. Rather than following a single design language, the property embraced an eclectic character that reflected Lloyd’s creativity and sense of humour. Some of its most unusual details were personal. According to Homes, a mould of the actor’s face adorned the exterior of the guesthouse, while a light switch incorporated a prop from the Jules Verne Time Train featured in Back to the Future Part III.

These touches gave the residence a personality rarely found in conventional luxury real estate. Across the main house and guesthouse, the compound offers more than 3,400 square feet of living space, adds the online report.

An artist’s approach to restoration

When Zappa discovered the property in 2022, its individuality remained intact, but years of insufficient maintenance had left it in need of considerable work. The artist saw potential in its unconventional design and took on the challenge of restoring it without erasing its history.Between 2023 and 2025, the renovation involved substantial structural and cosmetic improvements. New roofs were installed, countertops replaced and bathrooms renovated. The house was also raised so that a new foundation could be poured, with hand-laid crystals incorporated into the foundation as a personal, symbolic gesture, states the online report. The fireplaces received particular attention. Four were restored, while the fifth was completely replaced.

Throughout the process, the aim was to preserve the original Spanish character and the architectural personality Lloyd had introduced, while making the property more comfortable for contemporary living. The restoration effectively gave the ageing compound a new lease of life without stripping away the details that made it distinctive.

A distinctive home finds its buyer

The property’s sale comes amid a more measured Los Angeles housing market, where increased listings have given buyers greater choice and reduced the urgency that characterised earlier years.

Homes that require extensive work or appeal to a specific audience can face a more challenging path to a sale. Yet Lloyd’s former residence proved an exception. After just one weekend of open houses, the property attracted enough interest to prompt a deadline for offers.

It ultimately sold for $2.82 million, a $270,000 increase over Zappa’s 2022 purchase price. The swift sale underlines the appeal of homes with a strong sense of identity, particularly when their unusual features are supported by thoughtful restoration. In a market filled with polished, contemporary interiors, the Hollywood compound offered something harder to replicate: a layered architectural history, personal touches and a connection to one of cinema’s most recognisable franchises.Images Courtesy: Wikipedia and Google Maps
