KUCHING: A total of 129 mission schools across Sarawak have received funding amounting to RM20 million under the Mission School Financial Assistance Grant to upgrade and improve their facilities.
Sarawak deputy premier Douglas Uggah Embas said the funds were disbursed to the schools through six mission authorities under Phase 1 of the initiative.
Uggah said the allocation was part of the RM30 million approved by the Sarawak government for 2026, an increase of RM10 million from last year.
"The remaining RM10 million will be utilised for academic performance enhancement programmes in mission schools to ensure they also have the opportunity to attain better educational standards.
"Now that we have free tertiary education, our hope is that students from these schools will also get the opportunity to benefit from that facility," he said at the presentation of cheques by premier Abang Johari Openg to representatives of the mission schools.
He said the RM10 million included a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, English language and Mathematics mastery, as well as enhancing basic reading and counting skills.
