The Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) has expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the longstanding neglect of Ndokwa communities by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), vowing to intensify efforts to demand equitable distribution of development projects in the area.
The union made its position known on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during a press briefing following a meeting of its Executive Council, led by the President-General, Comrade Chief Amechi Asugwuni, at Ndokwa House in Kwale, Delta State. At the meeting, the union resolved to write formally to the NDDC Board Chairman to demand urgent attention to the development needs of Ndokwa communities.
Addressing journalists at the briefing, the NNU President-General lamented that, despite Ndokwa’s contributions to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, the area had continued to receive what he described as inadequate attention from the intervention agency.
He questioned why Ndokwa communities should continue to experience development deficits despite the natural resources extracted from their land, insisting that the NDDC was established to address the developmental needs of oil-producing communities across the Niger Delta.
According to him, the issue went beyond the individuals occupying the positions of chairman or managing director of the commission, stressing that the agency’s performance should be measured by its impact on the lives of the people and the development of host communities.
He called on the NDDC Board Chairman, whom he identified as an Ndokwa son, to use the opportunities provided by his office to ensure that the area received the attention it deserved.
The NNU President-General also appealed to the board chairman to treat the developmental concerns of Ndokwa as a matter of collective importance and work towards addressing what the union described as an imbalance in the distribution of projects across the Niger Delta.
He further called for the completion of abandoned projects in Ndokwa communities and the implementation of projects that had yet to receive adequate attention.
He maintained that the commission’s mandate would be undermined if communities whose natural resources contribute to national development continued to lack the infrastructure and social amenities expected from development interventions.
As part of its proposed response, Asugwuni disclosed that the union would send a formal letter to the appropriate NDDC authorities to seek dialogue and demand concrete action on the concerns raised.
However, he warned that the union would not remain passive if the situation persisted, declaring its readiness to mobilise Ndokwa people to demand the attention and development it believed the area deserved.
He noted that youths, women and elders across the Ndokwa nation shared concerns about the alleged neglect, adding that the issue should be treated as a collective development priority rather than a matter of political interest.
He said the NNU’s position formed part of its broader commitment to promoting the welfare, unity and development of Ndokwa communities while engaging relevant government institutions and development agencies to address issues affecting the people.
He urged the NDDC leadership to respond to the union’s concerns and demonstrate its commitment to equitable development across the Niger Delta through the delivery of new projects and the completion of abandoned ones.
