(CNS): Two people have died at a home in Broadleaf Close, East End, believed to be due to carbon monoxide poisoning from the use of a generator indoors. Emergency services were called to the home around 7:am, the police said. CPR was immediately administered to a 65-year-old man and a 7-year-old girl, believed to be his granddaughter. They were transported to the hospital and were subsequently pronounced deceased.
Two other female juveniles who were at the residence were also taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment. They are believed to be in stable condition, the RCIPS said. Police remain at the scene as the investigation continues.
The Ministry of Education and Training and the Department of Education Services have said the three children involved are all students from East End Primary School. As a result, classes are suspended for the day.
Officials said this was out of respect and to give students, staff and families time to come together and support one another. Members of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will be on site to care for and support students whose parents or guardians are unable to collect them right away.
All students will remain under adult supervision until they are safely collected. Counsellors and wellbeing staff are available to support students and staff today and in the days ahead, the ministry said.
The CIG said in a statement, “The Cayman Islands Government is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two lives, following an incident at a home in East End on the morning of 13 October. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their family, loved ones and all the East End community.
“Our thoughts are also with the two children who are being treated and monitored at a local hospital, and we pray for their full recovery. We are grateful to the emergency responders and medical personnel attending to those affected. Further information will be shared as it becomes available and appropriate to do so.”
The ministry and the DES said they were “deeply saddened by this morning’s tragic incident involving three students from East End Primary School, and extend heartfelt sympathy to their families and the entire school community”.
