KEMAMAN: A man died after being stung by a swarm of bees while trying to collect honey from a tree in Batu 18, Jalan Air Putih, Terengganu yesterday.
Hafizul Mat Nor, 40, was attacked by the bees about 9.50am.
District police chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli said the victim had asked a 44-year-old friend to accompany him to collect the honey.
He said the friend initially told the victim not to take the honey as the tree was very tall, but the victim decided to climb it anyway.
"While climbing the tree, a swarm of bees suddenly attacked and stung the victim.
"At that point, the victim shouted for his friend to run to safety.
"The victim tried to climb back down to save himself, and both of them ran into a pool of water at a nearby plantation," he said in a statement.
Razi said the victim then complained of pain in his legs and arms from the stings before getting out of the water and collapsing.
He said the victim's friend tried to wake him but, on realising he was unconscious and convulsing, immediately called the emergency line.
"The victim's friend immediately sought ambulance assistance before the victim was rushed to Kemaman Hospital for further treatment," he said.
He said the victim was, however, pronounced dead at the hospital at 6.42pm.
