Choosing where to stay can make a big difference to a first visit to the Kruger National Park, particularly for travellers planning to explore the park in their own vehicle.
The park has 12 main rest camps, along with smaller satellite and bushveld camps. The main camps are generally the easiest starting point for first-time visitors, as they offer facilities such as shops, restaurants, fuel stations and communal braai areas.
SANParks provides an overview of the available Kruger rest camps and facilities. Take a look.
1. Skukuza Rest Camp
Best for: First-time visitors who want plenty of facilities
Skukuza is Kruger’s largest rest camp and administrative headquarters. Situated beside the Sabie River in the southern part of the park, it offers a broad range of accommodation and facilities, making it a convenient base for visitors who want to combine game drives with a comfortable stay.
The camp has a restaurant, shop, fuel station and other amenities, while its location gives visitors access to a network of game-viewing roads in the wildlife-rich south. SANParks lists Skukuza among the park’s main accommodation options.
Its size and popularity mean it can feel busy, especially during peak holiday periods. However, for first-timers who want convenience and a wide choice of services, it is a practical option.
2. Lower Sabie Rest Camp
Best for: River views and game viewing
Lower Sabie is another popular option in southern Kruger. The camp overlooks the Sabie River, one of the park’s perennial rivers, and offers views towards the Lebombo Mountains.
Its setting is a major drawcard, but the surrounding area is also known for game viewing. Visitors can explore nearby roads and river routes in search of elephants, buffalo, antelope and predators.
The camp caters to different budgets and travel styles, with accommodation options ranging from camping to self-catering units. It also has facilities for visitors who prefer not to prepare every meal themselves.
Lower Sabie is a good choice for travellers who want to spend much of their time on game drives but still return to a scenic camp at the end of the day.
3. Satara Rest Camp
Best for: Visitors hoping to see lions and other big cats
Satara is located in central Kruger, in an area known for its open savannah and strong game-viewing opportunities.
SANParks describes the camp as being in one of the park’s better game-viewing areas, with lion, leopard and cheetah recorded regularly. Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and other general game are also found in the surrounding area.
The rest camp has a more rustic feel than some larger accommodation hubs, while still offering the main facilities visitors need for a self-drive stay.
Satara is particularly worth considering if seeing predators is high on your safari wish list. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, however, and the animals move freely throughout the park.
4. Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp
Best for: A scenic southern base
Berg-en-Dal lies in the south-western part of Kruger, beside the Matjulu Spruit. Unlike the flatter landscapes associated with some other parts of the park, this area has a more rugged, hilly setting.
The camp offers a range of accommodation, as well as facilities including a shop, restaurant, fuel station and swimming pool. It can suit visitors who want the convenience of a main rest camp while exploring a different landscape in the southern section of Kruger.
It is also worth considering for travellers entering through the park’s southern gates, depending on their route and itinerary.
5. Letaba Rest Camp
Best for: A quieter-feeling base in central Kruger
Letaba sits on a bend of the Letaba River, roughly midway between the park’s northern and southern boundaries. Its river setting and surrounding vegetation make it a scenic alternative to the busier southern camps.
SANParks notes that the sandy riverbed near Letaba is a good place to look for wildlife, particularly elephants. The camp also has facilities that make it a practical overnight stop, including a restaurant, shop and fuel station.
For first-time visitors planning a longer trip, Letaba can also be part of an itinerary that explores more than just the southern section of the park.
So, which Kruger camp should you choose?
| If you want… | Consider… |
|---|---|
| A convenient all-round base | Skukuza |
| River views and southern game viewing | Lower Sabie |
| A focus on big cats | Satara |
| A scenic setting in southern Kruger | Berg-en-Dal |
| To explore further north of the main southern circuit | Letaba |
For a first visit, it is often easier to choose one main camp and explore the surrounding roads rather than spend every night moving between different camps. Kruger is a large park, and driving distances can take longer than expected when wildlife sightings and stops are part of the plan.
If you have several nights, consider splitting your stay between the south and central Kruger to experience different habitats. Book as early as possible for school holidays and other busy travel periods, and check the official SANParks accommodation and booking pages for available units, current rates and facilities.
Finally, remember that no camp can guarantee sightings of a particular animal. Give yourself time, set out early when possible and enjoy the smaller sightings along the way, too.
