Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated the Northeast’s first visa application centre in Guwahati, making visa application services for 14 countries more accessible to people in Assam and other northeastern states.
The centre has been established by VFS Global, a company that provides visa application services on behalf of governments and diplomatic missions. The facility is expected to make it easier for people planning to travel abroad for tourism, education, business and other purposes to submit their visa applications closer to home.
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog, Transport Minister Charan Boro and Yusmi Talwar, Chief Executive Officer for South Asia at VFS Global, attended the inauguration. Representatives from the diplomatic missions of Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy and France were also present.
The centre will accept visa applications for Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Morocco, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The opening is expected to benefit applicants from across the Northeast, who often have to travel outside the region to access visa application services. With Guwahati serving as a major commercial and administrative centre, the facility is expected to improve access to international travel services.
The initiative comes amid efforts to strengthen Guwahati’s role as a regional hub for connectivity and services. However, visa applications will continue to be assessed by the respective countries and their authorised authorities, while the centre will facilitate the application process.
Details regarding appointments, required documents and service charges will be available through the authorised service provider.
