Mining mogul Solomon "MySol" Soka Madibela turned heads when he sat down on Podcast and Chill on Thursday, 15 October 2026, declaring that he has flipped the traditional banking relationship on its head. He claims banks now borrow money from him, not the other way around.
Filmed against a bright yellow curtain backdrop on the comic-style "Chillers Punch" branded set, the candid conversation saw MySol lay out his financial philosophy in striking detail. He explained that his goal was always to reach a position where financial institutions relied on him rather than the reverse.
"My plan and my dream have always been to be in a position where I can borrow the bank money and get money out of them," he said, describing his journey from borrowing money to build his business to now depositing enough capital to earn substantial returns.
He used a straightforward example to illustrate the model, telling the host MacG:
"If you borrow the bank 1 billion, they give you 7% of that interest, which gives you about 7.5 million to 6.8, 7.5 million."
He added that the goal was to park sufficient funds in the bank so that his children could live off the monthly interest, potentially earning between 30 million and 80 million per month depending on the amount deposited.
MySol also touched on the risks of doing business in South Africa, noting that the environment can be hostile for entrepreneurs.
"South Africa is a very dangerous environment. People want to take people's business," he said, explaining why he would rather set his children up to start their own ventures underpinned by passive income rather than inherit a business that could be contested.
Why MySol appeared on Podcast and Chill
The podcast appearance is notable given the controversy surrounding MySol and fellow businessman Benjamin "Benjy" Maponya. The two are embroiled in a dispute over their N4 Cluster mining venture at Buffels West. Maponya has accused MySol of cutting him out of shares and income after the deal was secured, a situation he claims led to significant personal losses, including the loss of his Hartbeespoort home. MySol subsequently sought an interdict from the Gauteng High Court over certain statements made about him.

Reactions to the clip were divided, with some finding the wealth talk informative and others sceptical:
@Joburg_Emperor argued:
"Your savings with a bank is actually you borrowing the bank money."
@Phiroane1 was less impressed:
"Motsepe would never come on a public platform and brag about his wealth; only the questionable do that!"
@vellyrmcf asked:
"Ain't that how banks work with everyone who invests with them? I also borrow money to the bank."
@RonaldMapwesera highlighted:
"Lending and borrowing are words that confuse many people when utilising them in sentences or speech."
@HavesomefunOnce observed:
"That part when he shared his plans regarding leaving money for his kids and the financial structure behind it was an interesting highlight of the interview."
