Salem District Collector K. Elambahavath said the shops, hotels and resorts in Yercaud should use glass or metal bottles instead of plastic bottles. Trader associations should self-regulate themselves in this regard.
The Tamil Nadu government is carrying out various activities to make the public aware of the ill effects caused by plastic products and to control the use of plastic.
Such awareness programmes were held from September 11 to 20 at 120 places in Yercaud panchayat union areas under the theme ‘Yecaud Nam Uyir Kadu’ to spread awareness among the public on the environmental harm caused by the use of plastic products, to avoid the use of plastic products and to protect the environment.
Following this, the Rotary Club of Salem City and the Yercaud Hotel Owners Association took a special environmental initiative named ‘Pasumai Yercaud’ with the aim of making Yercaud greener, cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
Mr. Elambahavath said that through this initiative environmentally friendly measures have been taken in Yercaud, including promoting reusable bags as an alternative to single-use plastic bags and encouraging the use of glass water bottles as an alternative to single-use plastic water bottles.
With the aim of creating a sense of responsibility for environmental protection among students from an early age, an initiative has been taken to provide saplings to school students for them to plant and maintain them.
Shops, hotels and resorts operating in Yercaud should use glass or metal bottles instead of plastic bottles. It would be good if the traders’ associations themselves, through this initiative, imposed self-regulation in this regard, the Collector added.
Stating that Yercaud is an important tourist destination, the Collector said that both residents and tourists should avoid using plastic products to ensure that the natural beauty of Yercaud are safe for future generations.
