YONGIN — The city of Yongin said on the 23rd that it has approved a development plan for the Tongsam 2 General Industrial Complex, to be built in the Tongsam-ri area of Namsa-eup, Cheoin District.
The complex will be developed by the private sector at a total cost of about 137.4 billion won ($96 million). The site covers 176,234 square meters. The city plans to break ground in May next year and complete construction by December 2028.
Of the total area, 121,344 square meters is designated for industrial facilities. The remaining land will house infrastructure to support the operations of tenant companies and their workers, including support facilities, parking lots, roads, parks and green space.
The city expects the complex to draw makers of materials, parts and equipment tied to the semiconductor industry. Target tenants include manufacturers of electronic components, computers, video, audio and communications equipment, as well as machinery and equipment makers and producers of non-metallic mineral products.
Once the complex is completed and tenants begin operations in earnest, the city projects about 700 new jobs will be created. SurPlus Global, a company with a strong position in used semiconductor equipment, has already expressed interest in moving in, citing its expansion plans and the industrial links the site offers.
Yongin expects the complex to generate synergies with nearby semiconductor hubs. The surrounding area includes the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex, and chip-related companies have continued to set up operations there.
"The Tongsam 2 General Industrial Complex will serve as a foundation for strengthening the clustering of semiconductor companies," a city official said. "We will systematically pursue industrial development strategies to build a semiconductor ecosystem and revitalize the local economy."
