A familiar voice from KwaZulu-Natal radio has traded his microphone for a campaign poster. Lwazi Mlwazet Mdladla, who built his name as an entertainment host and DJ at Vibe FM, has stepped away from broadcasting to contest the Ward 40 councillor seat under the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party in KwaMashu ahead of the 4 November 2026 local elections.
On 20 October 2026, Mdladla shared a campaign poster on Facebook, writing in isiZulu that he wants Ward 40 residents to witness real development with their own eyes. He pledged to deliver "great and big things" that would make every eThekwini resident wish they lived in Ward 40.
From radio waves to Ward politics
Speaking to Daily Sun, Mdladla explained how his time in radio shaped his political ambitions rather than defined his ceiling. "When I joined radio a few years ago, I aimed to grow and join big radio stations. Although I had to dump my career, radio played a huge role in creating a bond and relationship with the residents. Through radio, I understood real daily struggles residents are facing. That's how my passion for changing living conditions in our society grew. And when the MK party was formed, I didn't hesitate but became its serving member," he said.
Mdladla, who was born in KwaMashu, is also going door to door with community members as part of his ground-level campaign push.
