Remember when Mark Ballas and Maura Higgins did a Foxtrot to “Black Velvet” during the Dancing With the Stars premiere? Well, the song was performed by none other than Mark’s real-life wife, BC Jean, who is a professional singer and one half of their band!
These two have a very sweet love story that goes back over a decade, so prepare to become extremely invested.
They Met at a Mutual Friend’s House
The year was 2012. The sartorial vibe was fedoras:
BC told Riff Magazine, “It was kind of like a fun party night where singers and musicians would get up and perform.”
Meanwhile, Mark said that “Right when I got there, the whole room was just watching this girl on stage, and she was killing it. Her voice gave me the feels of a Janis Joplin. I was just blown away.”
They exchanged numbers, and the rest is history!
Mark Proposed Over Thanksgiving in 2015, and They Got Married a Year Later
Mark told Access Hollywood that he decorated their home with all of BC Jean’s favorite things, lined the driveway with roses and violets (a reference to their song, “Roses and Violets”), and got down on one knee.
"When she got in there I froze. My heart was pounding. I was cool as a cucumber all day. I've been on stages my whole life, and when she walked in the room I was thought, 'Whoa, here we go,'" he said. "So we kind of just held each other for a minute, and then I did the [one-knee] drop. I popped the question, she said yes. Everything went to plan and the way the house was decorated – it was just absolutely incredible."
Fun fact: when Mark and BC Jean got married, Dancing With the Stars judge Derek Hough was best man!

As! He! Should! Be!
They Have a Sweet Son Named Banksi Wylde Ballas
Banksi was born in 2023 and is the cutest.
They Perform in a Band Called Alexander Jean
Love a couple that creates art together.
FYI, BC Jean wrote “If I Were A Boy” for Beyoncé, and told Songwriting Magazine that “I wrote from such personal experiences, I never imagined that someone else would ever want to sing about my ex-boyfriend!. So I was like, ‘Tell her, thank you,’ but they were like, ‘No, you don’t understand, she has to have this song!’ Then I got lots of calls from lots of people being very, very persuasive, and the next thing I know, Beyoncé is singing the song and I’m getting signed to Clive Davis’ label, J Records.”
In conclusion: these two are peak talented.
