The recent performances of Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning have put him in a very critical spot.
Fans and analysts had high expectations for the quarterback because he comes from a prominent football family. However, Manning has so far struggled to live up to those expectations and has been facing intense criticism.
Chris Simms Questions Arch Manning’s Elite Potential
In a recent episode of Chris Simms “Unbuttoned”, analyst Chris Simms shared his point of view on the quarterback as he pushed back against the growing praise surrounding him and discussed his development and future prospects. He said:
“He looks like his arm is an independent contractor, like you’ve talked about. I’m curious your thoughts. Yeah, I’m not going to say that I think he’s elite. You’ve heard me talk about this a lot, right? I don’t see that. You know, I think the first pick of the draft thing is long gone. That’s not even a conversation. You know, I don’t think, for me, I don’t view him as a first-round draft pick as a quarterback right now. Again, there’s potential. There’s things I do like, so I certainly don’t want to say that. “
“But, yes, when I watch Arch compare to some other top quarterbacks in football, he does not catch my eye like those guys do, right? And whether it’s decision-making, pop on the ball at times, yes, the mechanics can be all over. But I’m not really worried about that in college football. His arm is elite. And his playmaking ability and pocket play is pretty elite, too. It’ll be interesting to see if they bounce back this week and he can get himself into the Heisman conversation once again. Because, like we’ve talked about and you’ve talked about a lot, Jeremiah Smith is certainly leading that right now.”

Simms’ comments highlight the growing scrutiny surrounding Manning’s development. While the quarterback has the advantage of playing in a high-profile program, expectations alone cannot guarantee success. His ability to improve his mechanics, recognize open receivers, and make quicker decisions will be crucial as the season progresses.
For Texas, Manning’s development remains an important storyline. The coaching staff will need to help him become more consistent while allowing him to build confidence under pressure. A strong performance in the coming games could help change the narrative surrounding his season.
However, the pressure will continue as fans evaluate whether Manning can live up to the expectations that followed him into college football. His response to this criticism could play a significant role in shaping perceptions of his future NFL potential.
Texas’ Saturday loss against the Florida Gators now only fuel the doubts around Manning.
