The latest incident at Salgaa recalls a fatal crash reported near Simba Cement on August 22, when several vehicles were involved in a collision that prompted rescue operations and caused heavy traffic along the highway.
Salgaa has long been regarded as an accident black spot, with one of its deadliest incidents occurring in 2009 when an oil tanker overturned and burst into flames, killing 140 people.
In a separate incident on Thursday night, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) aspirant for the Laikipia West parliamentary seat Simon Mburu was reportedly involved in a collision at Kwa Wanjiku Centre along the Nyahururu-Kinamba Road in Laikipia West Sub-County.
Mburu, popularly known as “Uncle”, was reportedly travelling in a vehicle that collided with a tractor, with images from the scene showing extensive damage to the car’s front bumper.
The tractor was also pictured damaged and overturned following the crash.
A second collision involving other vehicles was reported at the same location moments later, as members of the public and traffic officers worked to control the resulting congestion.
Reports circulating after the Kwa Wanjiku crash indicated that Mburu was safe, but authorities had not confirmed his condition or that of the other people involved.
Police officers were at the scene to assist those affected and direct traffic, although the circumstances surrounding the incidents remained unclear.
