Dylan Raiola's highly anticipated reunion with Nebraska has taken an unexpected turn.
The Oregon Ducks are reportedly planning to start quarterback Brock Thomas over Raiola for Saturday night's matchup against the Cornhuskers, according to On3's Pete Nakos.
The decision comes just one week after Raiola struggled during Oregon's 17-15 loss to UCLA, raising questions about his future role in the Ducks' offense.
Raiola completed just six of his 19 passing attempts for 43 yards while throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. His performance eventually led head coach Dan Lanning to bench him and turn to Thomas in hopes of generating an offensive spark.
Thomas responded by completing 11 of 15 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, nearly leading Oregon to a fourth-quarter comeback.
Although the Ducks ultimately fell short, Thomas' performance appears to have earned him an opportunity to start. The quarterback situation has become increasingly complicated since Oregon lost starter Dante Moore to a concussion during its Sept. 26 victory over USC.
Moore has since cleared concussion protocol and returned to practice, but he remains unavailable for Saturday's matchup.
Raiola initially appeared to be the natural replacement after throwing for 289 yards and two touchdowns against USC. However, his struggles against UCLA forced Oregon to reconsider its options.
The decision is particularly significant considering Raiola's history with Nebraska. The former five-star recruit spent two seasons with the Cornhuskers before transferring to Oregon earlier this year.
Saturday's matchup was expected to give Raiola an opportunity to face his former teammates and coaches for the first time since leaving the program.
Instead, he is now expected to watch from the sidelines as Thomas makes his first career start.
The move also comes at a critical point in Oregon's season.

The Ducks enter Saturday's matchup with a 3-2 record after opening the year with national championship expectations.
Another loss would make their path back into College Football Playoff contention increasingly difficult.
Nebraska, meanwhile, enters the game at 5-1 following a narrow 20-17 loss to Indiana.
With both teams looking to rebound, Oregon's quarterback decision adds another storyline to an already important Big Ten matchup.
Thomas now has an opportunity to establish himself as a reliable option while Moore continues his recovery.
For Raiola, what was supposed to be a highly anticipated reunion with Nebraska has instead become an unexpected setback in his first season with Oregon.
