The building came down along Yusuf Haji Avenue, next to Day to Day Supermarket on 9th Street, bringing business in the area to a halt as hundreds of people gathered at the scene.
Construction workers are feared to be among those trapped under the debris. Unverified reports also indicate that the building’s lower floors housed shops and other business premises.

Emergency teams have been deployed to the site as efforts to locate potential survivors and clear the rubble continue.
Why police lobbed teargas in Eastleigh
Police lobbed tear gas to disperse the growing crowd and clear the way for rescue teams working at the scene.
Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamed said officers intervened to prevent onlookers from obstructing emergency operations and to guard against possible looting of nearby shops.
Some youths were reportedly attempting to collect scrap metal from the rubble.
“Emergency crews are on site as efforts continue to search for survivors,” Mohamed said, as quoted by Nation.
He added that more police officers had been deployed to help coordinate the emergency response and support rescue operations.
Nairobi county deploys machinery to Eastleigh
Nairobi City County emergency response teams were also at the scene, with machinery deployed to assist in removing debris and reaching areas where people could be trapped.
“Machinery has been deployed to support debris removal and facilitate access to potential victims. The Relief Officer has been notified, and efforts to mobilise additional resources are ongoing,” the county government said in a statement.
The deployment is intended to support rescue teams as they work through the rubble in search of people who may have been caught in the collapse.
Kenya Red Cross response teams were also at the scene, joining other emergency personnel in the ongoing operation.
The organisation urged members of the public to keep their distance to avoid interfering with rescue efforts and allow responders to work safely.
