One year ago this month, Battlefield 6 launched on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Over the last 12 months, EA’s latest entry in the long-running FPS series has received numerous free updates, modes, maps, and more. Not all of it has been good. Some of it has been great. And through it all, fans have been very vocal, talking (and sometimes yelling) about it all online as DICE and the other studios working on BF6 continue to expand and improve on 2025’s best-selling game.
Even before Battlefield 6 launched, the game’s beta had people claiming the franchise was back after a few less-than-stellar previous releases. At one point, the Battlefield 6 open beta reached over 500,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. A lot of people, myself included, loved how much BF6 played and looked like BF4, one of the best games in the series. Its grounded combat, snappy gunplay, impressive destruction, and focus on performance really won a lot of people over, even some fans who had fallen out of love with Battlefield.
However, there was some controversy during the beta, with a big complaint from fans being that the game’s maps were too small. This has continued to be an issue that has dogged Battlefield 6 over its entire first year, even as some larger maps have made their way into the shooter. There was also a lot of debate around cosmetics and specifically around goofy skins, something Call of Duty had been including for years. Battlefield fans were hopeful that EA wouldn’t shove a bunch of crossover skins into the game, and the devs promised that the plan was to keep BF6’s visuals grounded and realistic. CoD seemingly reacted by making some changes ahead of BLOPS7‘s launch regarding cosmetics.
A Good Launch, A Bad First Season
In the weeks after it launched in October 2025, Battlefield 6 had extremely positive vibes. It reached over 700,000 concurrent players on Steam and became one of the year’s biggest games in just a few days. While there were some complaints about how grindy the game could feel and some yelling about odd changes to the franchise’s iconic Conquest mode (which were rolled back in less than 72 hours), the overall reaction to Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer was positive. And Battlefield 6‘s devs seemed responsive to complaints.
The launch of the game’s first season on October 28 brought with it a new map and a battle royale mode, Redsec. Neither was well received by the community. The battle royale mode was criticized for forcing players to play in squads and for shoving BF6‘s class system into the mode despite that not being a good fit. Redsec’s massive map was also criticized, not because it was too big, but because players were upset that the first really big map added to BF6 was only available in the game’s battle royale mode.
It didn’t help that Season One’s first new map, the first new battleground added to BF6 post-launch, was a complete dud. Blackwell Fields was too open, too small, and too boring. I found it to be extremely ugly and just not much fun to play on. Season One also brought plans to introduce “Blue Bro” to the game. This was a blue-tinted skin with a skull face mask that was going to be added to BF6. Many fans weren’t happy about this, claiming it went back on EA’s promise to not include zany or unrealistic skins in the game. The devs eventually nerfed the skin’s vibrancy, which pleased some.
It was clear that by the end of October, BF6‘s honeymoon phase was over. The good vibes began to vanish as fans continued to complain about small maps, a problem made worse by the fact that some players used in-game tools to turn BF6‘s Redsec map into a massive, classic Battlefield warzone. That community creation was so popular and well-received that the devs seemingly acknowledged it and the desire for bigger maps, promising they were in the works. And before the year could end, EA was caught potentially using AI tools to generate some in-game assets. An emblem that generated scrutiny was changed not long after it was added, but it left a sour taste in fans’ mouths as BF6 entered 2026.
This all culminated in BF6’s second season being delayed from January to February as the devs worked hard to fix issues, improve the game, and hopefully ship a better second season of content.
Classic Maps And Las Vegas Help
Battlefield 6 would end up being the best-selling game of 2025, beating out Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. However, that wasn’t enough to protect the devs who worked on BF6 from layoffs. In April, EA announced it was laying off employees across the teams that make up Battlefield Studios. Meanwhile, EA CEO Andrew Wilson received a $38 million bonus.
Season 2 of Battlefield 6 was better received than the first season, with the game’s Contaminated map being a winner with fans thanks to its big vistas, elevation changes, and overall size.
But Battlefield 6 really found success in the summer of 2026 with Season 3 and Season 4. These seasons added three classic, fan-favorite maps to BF6: Golumn Railway, Grand Bazaar, and Wake Island. That last map, Wake Island, is very nice to see return, as it’s been in basically every past BF game and is one of those locations that just makes people happy. It’s like an emergency button that the devs can smack when they need to get players excited about the game again, so I wasn’t shocked to see it appear a few months after launch.
Season 4 also added Tsuru Reef, a massive map that mixed island action with sea-based naval combat. It brought a lot of players back to the game who had been disappointed with earlier updates. Ironically though, there were some players who felt Tsuru Reef was too big. I imagine Battlefield devs saw those complaints and screamed. That would be my reaction.
That all brings us to Battlefield 6 as it stands in October 2026, one year after its blockbuster launch. The game’s fifth season launched this month to a lot of hype and praise from fans. Two new maps, one set in Las Vegas and the other in Area 51, have proved to be big hits with most fans. These maps aren’t just big, but they are also uniquely themed and offer up some new experiences. They also show that the current BF6 team can make new, original maps that stand toe-to-toe with some of the classics, which is nice to hear, as Battlefield 6 can’t survive on reheated leftovers forever.
BF6 Still Has Some Old Problems And An Uncertain Future
Yet for all of its improvements, many of Battlefield 6’s problems are still lingering around like cobwebs in the attic. The debate over cosmetics has reached a boiling point this month after EA added a big Dead Space–themed event to the game. Some fans are fine with it, as this is just a limited-time Halloween event. Others see it as EA going back on its promises about no silly skins.
And then you have allegations of AI slop making its way into the game again, this time with players pointing to some skins that contain typos, comical amounts of pistols, and other oddities.
The current vibes around Battlefield 6 are mostly fine, but nowhere near as positive as they were shortly after launch. On the plus side, things don’t seem as dismal and negative as they did in those dark days of season one. I imagine that, for many of the devs working on BF6 in 2026, this is probably about the best they could hope for, and at this point keeping the community approximately this happy moving forward is likely the goal.
If BF6 can continue to deliver maps as good as Las Vegas and Tsuru Reef while also continuing to add features people want and fixing issues, I think it could have a good second year ahead of it. Then again, EA’s new owners and the company’s laser focus on cutting costs could blow all of this up and lead to Battlefield 6 dying a slow live-service death. As a fan of the game, I hope that’s not the case. But as a person living in this timeline and reading the news, I’m prepared for the worst.
