CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka said on Sunday that he and other leaders of the outfit will approach Delhi Police on Monday to seek a date for holding a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar.
His statement came a day after three senior party leaders were detained at Delhi airport ahead of the group’s planned demonstration in the national capital.
The Cockroach Janta Party had planned to hold the protest on Saturday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision exercise.
The three leaders were released on Sunday after being produced before an executive magistrate, and said they would continue their agitation.
In a post on X, Ranka said he, along with CJP co-convenor Saurav Das, legal head Ratna Singh and other leaders, would visit Parliament Street Police Station at 10 am on Monday to seek a date for the protest. “Delhi Police can give us a date for Jantar Mantar in 24 hours, else the CJP will give another protest call,” Ranka said.
Delhi Police detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, Ranka and Das after their flight from Mumbai landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday.
The leaders alleged they were forcibly removed from the aircraft and taken into custody without being shown written grounds for their detention.
The detention came amid extensive security arrangements and restrictions across Delhi ahead of the proposed demonstration. The CJP accused the authorities of preventing protesters from reaching the designated protest site.
After their release, the three leaders alleged that their phones had been seized during detention and that they were denied access to legal counsel. Ranka described the developments as “reminiscent of the Emergency”, and said trains were cancelled and protesters were harassed to stop them from reaching Delhi.
The leaders also accused the government of turning their campaign against the Election Commission into a confrontation with the ruling establishment.
With the protest blocked on Saturday and the party’s top leaders released a day later, the CJP has now said it will formally seek permission from Delhi Police for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar, while continuing to press its allegations over the electoral rolls issue.
