Another Norwegian football team has made its mark in the top leagues, and it’s even called Viking. The Stavanger-based team scored three goals against powerhouse Bayern Munchen during their first match in the Champions League, and Bayern Munchen failed to beat them.
Commentators were still raving on Wednesday over Viking’s performance at home in Stavanger Tuesday night, and calling it one of the best moments ever in Norwegian football history. The match ended in a 3-3 tie, with two of Bayern Munchen’s goals kicked in by none other than Harry Kane, captain of England’s national team during last summer’s World Cup.
At one point, Viking was even leading 2-0, until Kane scored his two goals, followed by a another one from Luis Diaz. Viking’s Gianni Stensness, Peter Christiansen and Herman Haugen, the latter of whom scored the tying third goal after a long run down the field, remained the heroes of the evening for Norwegian fans.
“We’ve said we would try to create something that can be talked about for generations,” Viking’s leader Eirik Bjørnø, told state broadcaster NRK. “This was completely magical.” Viking just recently qualified to play in the Champions League.
