Russia interfered in the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on the podcast The Rest Is Politics.
Burnham said that as soon as he entered Downing Street, he’d asked whether there was Russian interference in 2016:
I’ve had the clear answer that, yes, there was. […] I think we’ve been too much on the back foot on that actually and we haven’t informed people sufficiently about the extent to which people are seeking to disrupt the political process from overseas.
Burnham did not specify what Moscow’s interference involved.
The referendum on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union was held in June 2016, with 51.9% of voters supporting the move to leave the bloc. The U.K.’s membership officially ended in 2020.
