Comrade Churchill Oyowe has been re-elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, for a second term after defeating his challenger, Comrade Kenneth Obieh, in a keenly contested election.
Oyowe, who represented the State Ministry of Information Chapel, polled 235 votes to defeat Obieh, who secured 218 votes. Both candidates belong to the same chapel.
In other results, Comrade Patrick Ochei of the Indigenous Correspondents Chapel emerged as Vice Chairman, while Comrade Felix Ekwu of DBS Warri was elected State Secretary.
Comrade Josephine Omodior, also of the Indigenous Correspondents Chapel, re-elected as State Assistant Secretary.
Comrades Caroline Ubini, Toju Oteri and Michael Ilaya were returned unopposed as Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Auditor, respectively.
The results were announced by the NUJ Vice President, South-South Zone, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, after which the newly elected executive members took their oaths of office and allegiance.
The election featured two groups within the union. Oyowe, alongside Comrades Monday Osayande, Pere Botu and Andy Emephia, contested under the Power Consolidation Team, while Obieh, Ochei, Ekwu and Omodior ran under the Stand Up Team.
Oyowe’s re-election ushers in another term of leadership for the Delta State Council following an election that attracted delegates from the union’s 18 chapels across the state.
