GEOJE — Hanwha Ocean (042660.KS) has created a dedicated nuclear-powered submarine organization called the Jangbogo-N Development Division and begun recruiting experienced engineers in nuclear propulsion for naval vessels. The company aims to secure the technology and personnel needed to meet the timeline of the government's nuclear-powered submarine program.
Hanwha Ocean said on the 12th that the new division was established to internalize core technologies and build a foundation for the business. The company plans to use the division as a single channel for cooperation with the government, the Navy and other related agencies.
The recruitment targets specialists with at least five years of experience in five fields related to nuclear propulsion for naval vessels. Applications close on the 25th of this month. The five fields are integrated design linking nuclear and propulsion systems, piping layout and stress analysis engineering, instrumentation and control (I&C) interface design, nuclear licensing and safety regulation, and nuclear quality management.
Engineers in integrated design will analyze technical requirements and design outputs to integrate the propulsion system. The piping field involves arranging systems within the confined space of a submarine and ensuring the integrity of piping and support structures. The I&C role covers reviewing the design of instrumentation and control systems for the nuclear plant and designing interfaces between those systems and the vessel. The licensing field involves analyzing nuclear laws and safety regulations to develop response strategies, while the quality field covers building and verifying quality assurance and management systems across the nuclear plant.
Hanwha Ocean said it is the only company that has taken part in the construction of all of the Navy's Jangbogo I, II and III submarines. The company plans to continue expanding hiring in related fields to prepare for the national project.
"Hanwha Ocean's Special Ship Business Division is leading South Korea's naval vessel business on the strength of world-class warship technology," said Choi Jung-hoon, an executive vice president and head of the Jangbogo-N Development Division at Hanwha Ocean's Special Ship Business Division. "Unlike existing reactors for land-based plants and commercial vessels, this involves an entirely new reactor environment that must withstand sharp turns, rapid maneuvers and explosive shock. By recruiting nuclear specialists ahead of time, we will faithfully prepare for this core national project."
