The Taraba State House of Assembly has unanimously approved a bill seeking the establishment of state police in Nigeria, in a move aimed at strengthening security, improving crime prevention and enhancing public safety across the state.
The lawmakers approved the bill on Tuesday after it was presented to the Speaker, John Kizito Bonzena, and laid before the House by the Majority Leader, Jethro Yakubu Zikengyu, for consideration.
The bill originated from the National Assembly as part of ongoing legislative efforts to establish state police and strengthen the country’s security architecture.
Following its consideration, the lawmakers unanimously adopted the proposed legislation, paving the way for the next stage of the legislative process.
Assembly highlights security benefits
Speaking on the development, Bonzena said the proposed state police system would help curb criminal activities, create employment opportunities and improve collaboration among security agencies operating in Taraba State.
He explained that the initiative would strengthen the capacity of security institutions to respond more effectively to emerging security challenges and improve the protection of lives and property.
The Speaker’s remarks come amid continued efforts to explore additional approaches to addressing insecurity and improving the effectiveness of law enforcement across the country.
The proposed establishment of state police is expected to give states a greater role in responding to security concerns within their territories, subject to the relevant constitutional and legislative provisions.
Clerk to communicate decision to National Assembly
The Clerk of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Salmuna Amos Sani, is expected to formally communicate the decision of the lawmakers to the National Assembly for further legislative action.
The communication will enable the state legislature’s position on the bill to be considered within the ongoing legislative process surrounding the proposed establishment of state police.
The unanimous approval by the Taraba lawmakers adds to the legislative steps being taken towards the proposed reform of Nigeria’s policing system.
Senate, Reps have passed bill
The development follows the passage of the bill by the Senate on June 24, 2026, and the House of Representatives on July 23, 2026.
The two chambers of the National Assembly had approved the proposal as part of efforts to advance the establishment of state police in the country.
The proposal is intended to strengthen security arrangements by creating a framework for policing at the state level, alongside existing federal security structures.
However, the establishment and operation of state police will depend on the completion of the applicable legislative and constitutional processes.
