By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who spent almost a year behind bars because he could not post bail has finally regained his freedom after the complainant in his common assault case failed to appear in court.
Ruben Flores was brought from the Belize Central Prison to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, October 14, where his trial was scheduled to begin before a Magistrate in Court #5.
However, the prosecution informed the court that the male complainant could not be located despite attempts by a process server to serve him with the necessary court documents.
With the complainant unavailable to testify, the prosecution was unable to proceed, prompting the Magistrate to dismiss the charge for want of prosecution.
Flores had been charged in connection with an alleged common assault dating back to October 2025. Although he had been granted bail, he remained incarcerated for almost a year because he was unable to meet the bail requirements.
The Magistrate informed Flores that his case had been dismissed and, with no other matters pending against him, he was free to leave.
The dismissal brings an end to nearly a year of incarceration for Flores without a conviction in the case.
