The New England Patriots’ 30-24 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 7 exposed some frustrating issues on offense, and running back TreVeyon Henderson was among those who struggled; amid his explosive speed, he couldn’t find much room to operate, raising questions about his decision-making and execution.
Now, the Patriots legend has delivered a clear message. Troy Brown believes that Henderson needs to study one of the NFL’s most effective runners and learn to trust his blockers rather than rushing into decisions.
Troy Brown Urges TreVeyon Henderson To Study Kenneth Walker III
On October 23, Justin Trombino shared Brown’s postgame assessment of Henderson on X. The Patriots HOF pointed to the Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III as a player Henderson should study, particularly when it comes to patience and reading blocks.
“I kind of agree with the Henderson take. He needs to sit down and watch Kenneth Walker, he really does. I said it a few weeks ago, just show him tape of guys who are patient and teams that run those duo plays that they have him run a lot and just have the patience to be able to let the blocks develop and then make those defensive lineman stick their head either in the A-gap or B-gap or whatever it is and you go the opposite way. He’s just too fast and he reacts to things too fast.”

Brown’s concern is that Henderson’s speed sometimes works against him. Rather than allowing the offensive line to develop running lanes, the running back can react too quickly, limiting the effectiveness of the Patriots’ blocking schemes. Brown specifically highlighted the duo concepts the Patriots frequently use, where a running back must read the defensive front before committing to a lane.
Brown also believes Henderson can benefit from watching how Walker allows blocks to develop before making his move. The key is getting defenders to commit to one gap before attacking the space they leave behind.
This analysis gets to the point of Henderson’s situation now. Henderson has great acceleration, but that does not mean much, as pure speed alone will not be enough to create significant plays in the NFL. Henderson should learn how to use his athleticism in coordination with patience, good timing, and awareness.
This message is quite tough for Henderson because, against the Bears, he had only three carries for nine yards and two receptions for 14 yards. Besides, he was quite poor at blocking, which is a problem for a team already suffering from injuries on its offensive line.
At the same time, veteran Rhamondre Stevenson became a more reliable player as he rushed for only 22 yards but had five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, which meant one more good target for quarterback Drake Maye.
Brown is aware of what a good football game looks like because he played in the NFL for 15 years, won three Super Bowls, and then coached for New England in 2020-2024. In other words, this man asks nothing about becoming less explosive; he just wants to teach how to use his abilities properly.
