Cristiano Ronaldo has maintained his dominance as the world’s highest-paid athlete, increasing his estimated annual earnings from $275 million in 2025 to a record $300 million in 2026, according to Forbes.
The Portuguese football superstar retained the top position for the fourth consecutive year and the sixth time overall, extending a remarkable run that has made him one of the most financially successful athletes in sporting history. Blueprint reports
Ronaldo’s latest earnings represent a $25 million increase on his 2025 total, when he also topped the ranking ahead of basketball star Stephen Curry, boxer Tyson Fury and other global sporting figures.
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward’s latest financial haul places him comfortably ahead of Mexican boxing champion Canelo Alvarez, who occupies second position with an estimated $170 million, while Argentine football icon Lionel Messi ranks third with $140 million.
According to Forbes, the 10 highest-paid athletes collectively earned approximately $1.4 billion during the 12 months covered by the latest assessment, reflecting the enormous commercial opportunities available to elite sportsmen through playing contracts, endorsements, prize money and business investments.
Ronaldo’s $300 million total also matches the nominal earnings record set by American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015, making it one of the largest annual totals Forbes has recorded since it began tracking athletes’ earnings in 1990.
How Ronaldo extended his lead
Ronaldo’s financial dominance is largely driven by his lucrative contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he continues to command one of the biggest salaries in world football.
Forbes estimates that the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward earned approximately $235 million from his playing contract during the assessment period, while another $65 million came from endorsements, appearances, licensing, memorabilia and other commercial ventures.
His move to Saudi Arabia in December 2022 significantly increased his football earnings and strengthened his position as a leading figure in the kingdom’s effort to attract global sporting stars.
Beyond his performances on the pitch, Ronaldo has developed a powerful commercial brand built around sponsorship agreements, business interests and a substantial international following.
His appeal extends beyond football supporters, making him attractive to companies seeking access to audiences across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
The Portuguese captain has also continued to pursue business opportunities outside football, including investments in hospitality, fitness and lifestyle ventures. In February 2026, he acquired a 25 per cent stake in Spanish second-division club UD Almería, further illustrating his growing interest in football ownership.
Ronaldo’s latest earnings demonstrate how elite athletes can combine sporting contracts with commercial activities to generate income on a scale that extends well beyond traditional salaries.
From $275m to $300m in one year
Although Ronaldo retained the top position in 2025, his latest earnings mark a substantial increase over the previous ranking.
In Forbes’ 2025 assessment, the Portuguese forward earned an estimated $275 million, placing him ahead of Curry, who recorded $156 million, and Tyson Fury, whose estimated earnings stood at $146 million.
The 2026 figures show Ronaldo increasing his total by $25 million to $300 million, widening the gap between himself and the athletes immediately below him.
His latest earnings are approximately $130 million more than Alvarez’s $170 million and $160 million above Messi’s $140 million.
The figures also underline Ronaldo’s consistency at the top of the ranking. He first led the list in 2016, when his estimated earnings were $88 million, and has since returned to the summit repeatedly despite changes in clubs, leagues and the commercial landscape of international football.
Forbes notes that Ronaldo has now matched basketball legend Michael Jordan’s six appearances at the top of the earnings ranking. Only golf icon Tiger Woods, who has led the list 11 times, has topped it more frequently.
Alvarez and Messi follow Ronaldo
Alvarez occupies second place with estimated earnings of $170 million, making the Mexican boxer the highest-ranked athlete outside football in the top three.
His total includes approximately $160 million from boxing and $10 million from commercial activities. His lucrative fight arrangements, including a reported multi-fight deal associated with Saudi Arabia’s boxing investment programme, have helped place him among the world’s biggest sporting earners.
Messi follows in third position with $140 million. The Inter Miami forward earned an estimated $70 million from football and another $70 million through endorsements and other commercial ventures.
The Argentine’s ranking reinforces the continuing financial power of football’s biggest names, even as athletes from basketball, baseball, boxing, golf and motorsport compete for positions among the world’s wealthiest sporting professionals.
Ronaldo’s lead over Messi is particularly striking given their long-standing rivalry, which has extended from their years competing in European football to their subsequent careers in Saudi Arabia and the United States.
Basketball stars and Ohtani strengthen the ranking
Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James occupies fourth position with estimated earnings of $137.8 million. His total comprises approximately $52.8 million from basketball and $85 million from endorsements and other commercial activities.
Japanese baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani ranks fifth with $127.6 million, while Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry occupies sixth place with $124.7 million.
Ohtani’s position is particularly notable because an estimated $125 million of his earnings came from endorsements and other off-field activities, compared with approximately $2.6 million from his playing income during the period measured by Forbes.
His commercial partnerships with international brands have transformed him into one of the most marketable figures in baseball, demonstrating how global recognition can generate enormous revenue outside an athlete’s primary sporting contract.
Curry, meanwhile, continues to benefit from his standing as one of basketball’s most recognisable players, with endorsements and business interests contributing approximately $65 million to his total.
The presence of James, Curry and Ohtani among the leading earners illustrates the increasing importance of commercial opportunities in determining athletes’ overall financial positions.
Rahm, Benzema, Durant and Hamilton complete the top 10
Spanish golfer Jon Rahm occupies seventh position with estimated earnings of $107 million, including approximately $97 million from golf-related activities and $10 million from commercial ventures.
French footballer Karim Benzema ranks eighth with $104 million. His earnings include approximately $100 million from playing contracts and $4 million from endorsements and other commercial activities. His move from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal during the period covered by the ranking also reflects the financial influence of Saudi Arabian football.
American basketball star Kevin Durant takes ninth position with $103.8 million, comprising approximately $54.8 million from his playing career and $49 million from commercial activities.
Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton completes the top 10 with an estimated $100 million. The Ferrari driver earned approximately $70 million from racing-related income and another $30 million through endorsements and business ventures.
Hamilton’s total also represents a record for Formula One earnings in Forbes’ assessment, surpassing the previous mark he established in 2021 while racing for Mercedes.
Saudi investment reshapes the business of sport
Saudi Arabia’s growing involvement in international sport remains an important factor in the earnings of several athletes on the list.
Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr has substantially increased his playing income, while Benzema’s Saudi Pro League contracts have helped him maintain a position among the world’s highest earners.
Alvarez’s boxing arrangements and Rahm’s participation in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit further demonstrate how investment from the Middle East has created new financial opportunities across different sporting disciplines.
The influx of money has altered the negotiating power of athletes and expanded competition for some of the biggest names in international sport.
However, the financial outlook is not without uncertainty. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced in April 2026 that it would stop funding LIV Golf beyond the current season as part of a broader reassessment of its spending.
Nevertheless, the commercial influence of Middle Eastern investment continues to shape elite sport through contracts, sponsorships, tourism partnerships and other business arrangements.
How Forbes calculated the rankings
Forbes’ 2026 assessment covers earnings collected between May 1, 2025, and May 1, 2026. The estimates include salaries, bonuses, prize money, endorsements, appearance fees, licensing, memorabilia and other business ventures.
The figures are calculated before taxes and agents’ fees and should not be confused with the athletes’ overall net worth.
The combined earnings of the top 10 reached approximately $1.4 billion, more than double the $635 million recorded by the leading 10 athletes in 2016, when Ronaldo first topped the ranking.
The latest figures also highlight the growing importance of commercial revenue. While the top 10 generated an estimated $902 million from on-field activities, their off-field earnings reached approximately $513 million, driven by sponsorships and business interests.
Ronaldo’s continued presence at the summit remains the defining feature of the ranking. A decade after first claiming the top position, the Portuguese forward has increased his earnings to an unprecedented nominal total in Forbes’ tracking history, reinforcing his standing as one of the most commercially successful athletes the world has ever seen.
