Fan Franchise voting opened Monday, October 19, and closes Thursday, October 22 at 4 p.m. Eastern. Fan-selected players are scheduled to be announced Friday, followed by coach selections from October 24–26, entertainment-player announcements October 27 and the 2027 Player Draft on October 28.
That part is straightforward.
What isn’t straightforward is the strategy.
A growing discussion among Banana Ball fans centers on a simple question: Should you use your Fan Franchise vote on the biggest star on your favorite team, or on the player you think actually needs protection?
That debate is already playing out in Banana Ball fan communities.
One popular Reddit discussion posted Monday encouraged supporters to think strategically because fans receive only one selection per team. Posters argued that obvious stars may already be likely coach selections, while less-established players could be more vulnerable to entering the draft pool.
Another discussion Tuesday made the same point more directly, with some fans saying they prefer to vote for players who appear less certain to be retained rather than players they assume the coaches will select anyway.
“The draft is an important element in preparing for the upcoming season and tour,” said Elaine Tyler, a longtime Savannah Banana fan from Atlanta, GA.
That has created an unusual dynamic.
The Fan Franchise vote sounds like a popularity contest. In practice, some supporters are treating it like roster strategy.
Popularity vs. protection
Consider the Savannah Bananas.
It would be easy to vote for one of the team’s most recognizable names. Jackson Olson, KJ Jackson, Bill LeRoy, Ryan Cox and others have substantial fan followings.
But some fans are asking whether using the vote on a player widely expected to return is the best use of their only selection.
Instead, they are discussing players they view as less certain coach selections.
That same conversation is happening across the Party Animals, Firefighters, Texas Tailgaters, Loco Beach Coconuts and Indianapolis Clowns.
Fans are openly comparing playing time, performance, popularity, entertainment value and even perceived roster needs.
That is something you normally hear from coaches and front offices.
In Banana Ball, the fans are being invited into it.
But how much power do fans really have?
That is the more interesting question.
Banana Ball has confirmed the October 28 Player Draft and the timeline leading into it, but the league’s public draft page still says additional details are coming.
The precise relationship between fan selections, coach selections, entertainment-player designations and the final draft pool deserves more explanation.
Fans in online discussions have repeatedly referenced coaches being able to retain significantly more players than the fan vote protects, but Banana Ball’s public draft page does not currently spell out the complete retention rules.
That distinction matters.
If the coaches already intend to retain a player, a fan vote may effectively free the coach to use a selection elsewhere.
On the other hand, fans do not know every coach’s plan.
What appears “obvious” from the outside may not be obvious inside the organization.
Roster decisions can involve performance, positional needs, injuries, travel availability, entertainment roles, contracts and other considerations fans never see.
So the idea of a “wasted” vote may be too simplistic.
The human side of the draft
There is another piece of this that has started appearing in fan discussions: what roster uncertainty means for the players themselves.
Banana Ball players are not names moving around a fantasy roster.
“Being a player and not knowing must be excruciating,” said Ronald Valley on a Facebook post.
They have families, jobs, travel schedules and lives built around their teams. How the families deal with this few people, if any, can understand.
Some fans have expressed discomfort with not knowing which players will return until late October.
Others argue that roster movement is a normal part of building competitive teams and that the draft gives players additional opportunities across the growing Banana Ball league.
Both can be true.
The 2027 season will be Banana Ball’s biggest yet, with six established clubs heading into an international schedule and another season of absolutely enormous venues.
That growth means roster decisions matter more than they ever have before.
The questions Banana Ball still needs to answer
Before draft night, several questions would help fans understand exactly what they are voting on.
How many players can each coach retain?
Are all rostered players eligible for the Fan Franchise vote?
What happens to a player who is neither selected by fans nor retained by a coach?
Can players decline to enter the draft?
How are entertainment players treated differently from baseball-roster players?
And perhaps most importantly: How much does the fan vote really affect a team’s final roster?
Banana Ball has built its entire identity around Fans First.
This week, fans are finding out exactly what having a voice in roster construction actually means.
And judging by the debate already underway, plenty of them are taking that responsibility seriously.
The Fan Franchise voting window closes Thursday, October 22 at 4 p.m. Eastern.
The 2027 Player Draft follows Wednesday, October 28.
Between now and then, expect the arguments over who deserves a vote to get a lot louder.
