Oct. 18—Mountain West Freshman of the Year and sophomore guard Jake Hall scored 22 points on 8 of 10 shooting and the University of New Mexico Lobos Men's basketball team beat the Washington State Cougars 92-64 in an exhibition game at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday.
The Cougars never really stood a chance after the Lobos went on an 8-2 run to start the game, and pulled away with a 16-0 run with just under 14 minutes left in the first half.
Midway through the second half, the Cougs trailed by 42 points 80-38, their largest deficit of the game.
Uriah Tennette hit a 3-pointer on the Lobos' first possession but East Texas A&M senior transfer guard Ronnie Harrison replied with a layup to make it 3-2.
But the Lobos separated themselves with a 16-point surge in a four-minute span in the first period started by redshirt freshman Imran Suljanovic's 3-pointer at 13 minutes, 47 seconds.
The Cougars stopped the bleeding when Dembele stole the ball from Hall, and connected with Houston on a fastbreak to make it 30-16. But WSU couldn't recover and found themselves in a 25-point deficit entering halftime.
Houston led WSU with 14 points and two assists, and Harrison added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists for the Cougs.
Andrew Cook leads Eagles to close win over CSU Bakersfield
After missing all of last season with an ankle injury, and uncertainty surrounding his college eligibility this year, Andrew Cook shined in his 2026 season debut with the Eastern Washington Eagles leading all players with 24 points in a 71-65 exhibition victory against CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners at Reese Court in Cheney on Sunday.
Cook also added five rebounds to go with three assists. He was also a defensive force with a block early in the first half and two steals, including a critical one late in the second half that helped the Eagles retake the lead with just over three minutes remaining.
Down 58-56 with 4 minutes, 7 seconds remaining, Cook stole the ball and was fouled by Tom Koppens on the fastbreak. Cook made his first free throw, but missed the second. But returning redshirt junior forward Emmett Marquardt got the offensive rebound, and Cook converted the layup to make it 59-58. EWU never trailed again.
After a close first five minutes, the Eagles scored six straight thanks to a 3-pointer from Isak Homelius and found themselves up by eight 15-7 midway through the first half — their largest lead of the game.
But the Roadrunners marched back regaining the lead with 5 minutes, 25 seconds left in the first period after Malachi Richardson missed his 3-pointer, and Jaden Alexander converted his shot to make it 23-21.
EWU and CSU Bakersfield exchanged leads, and the Eagles entered halftime down three.
