Nurses at four Endeavor Health hospitals filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board Oct. 22 seeking an election to be represented by Teamsters Local 743.
Endeavor’s hospitals in Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park and Skokie, Ill., according to the NLRB filing.
Nurses are seeking a voice in decisions affecting their workplace, including patient and staff safety, according to a union media advisory shared with Becker’s.
“Endeavor Health respects the federally protected rights of our nurses to make an informed choice about union representation,” the system said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “We also recognize the challenges in providing safe, seamless patient care when a union acts as the intermediary between our nurses and the hospital leadership.”
The statement added that the system continues to believe “direct conversations between our nurses and leadership are the best way” to navigate industry challenges.
The petition is the second from Endeavor nurses this month. Nurses at Endeavor Health Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill., filed a petition Oct. 8 seeking to join the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United. That proposed unit includes about 1,000 nurses, and voting is scheduled for Nov. 4-5, according to the NLRB’s notice of election.
The filings come as Endeavor and Chicago-based Rush University System for Health plan to merge. If the merger receives regulatory approval, the combined system would include 12 hospitals and more than 46,000 employees.
