The adoption of cloud computing technology has altered the way firms manage storage, applications, employees, and services. Businesses today run their operations in an environment of web applications, hosting, remote machines, shared infrastructure, and cloud computing workloads. This method increases efficiency and flexibility, but it alters the manner in which security has to be handled.
Cloud computing security does not refer to any particular product or a one-time effort. It refers to a mix of policy, access, monitoring, data security, configuration, and response mechanisms within cloud computing environments. Assets can alter very quickly, whereas users and applications connect from various locations. Repeatable security controls become very important in such situations.
1. Understand the Cloud Service Model
Understanding cloud services and security practices starts with recognizing the different service models that businesses use and the level of control and responsibility associated with each. There are three kinds of cloud services that firms commonly utilize:
- infrastructure
- platforms
- software applications
These different models affect the level of business control over certain resources.
When using infrastructure services, businesses get better control over VMs, networks, storage, and operating systems. Platform services allow delegating some control of the underlying infrastructure to providers, while software services normally offer ready-to-use applications.
This issue is crucial when considering security since increased control may increase responsibility.
| Cloud model | Typical business use | Main security focus |
| Infrastructure | Hosting applications and workloads | Network, operating system, identity, and workload security |
| Platform | Application development and deployment | Code, identities, data, configurations, and interfaces |
| Software | Business applications and collaboration | Accounts, permissions, data, devices, and application settings |
Teams should document who manages access, patching, encryption, backups, logging, and incident response for each major service.
2. Build Strong Identity and Access Controls
Identity is crucial within cloud systems. Employees, contractors, software, administrators, and automation all could require access to data. If permissions are too broad, a compromised user will reveal too much information.
Organizations should follow the least privilege principle and assign only necessary access rights to users. Privileged access requires additional security measures since privileged users can modify configuration, access sensitive data, or create user accounts.
Privileged accounts must be protected by multi-factor authentication methods. Inactive user accounts and permissions should be reviewed frequently.
Organizations should also review access permissions upon employee role changes or departure.
3. Protect Data Throughout Its Lifecycle
Cloud security should include the protection of data during transfer, processing by applications, and at rest. Sensitive data needs better protection measures compared to regular business files.
Encryption can help to minimize exposure in case the data is intercepted or the stored data is accessed by anyone without authorization. Yet, encryption is not the solution to everything. It’s important to have clear guidelines for data classification, storage, distribution, backup, and deletion.
Keep data where it is required to be stored and give access only to authorized users or applications. Make sure that backup data is protected as well because this can be an additional target for attacks.
The cybersecurity guidance issued in Europe puts emphasis on data protection, loss of control, among others. Cloud security guidelines from ENISA provide questions for organizations to evaluate when considering cloud services and their security.
4. Monitor Configurations and Activity Continuously
A cloud environment can undergo hundreds or thousands of changes through automatic deployment, application upgrades, user behavior, or infrastructure alterations. What was a secure configuration before might not be safe anymore after some subsequent changes.
Continuous monitoring allows the organizations to discover any anomalies, exposed resources, strange permission levels, and configuration drift. At the same time, logging is just as important since security experts require reliable logs to analyze suspicious activities.
Monitoring should not be limited only to successful logins. Some other useful signs are changes in permissions, strange access places, massive file transfers, creation of new admin accounts, and odd changes in the network or storage configurations.
Create alarms for critical incidents and determine their owner. This will help avoid creating security noise through excessive amounts of alerts.
5. Secure Applications, APIs, and Workloads
Cloud applications frequently require the use of APIs, containers, automated tools, and integrations with third parties. Every connection adds one more element to secure.
Code and dependencies of the applications should be reviewed for any vulnerabilities, application secrets must be secured, and credentials should not be included in source code and configuration files. Post-deployment security testing should be performed since applications and dependencies may evolve over time.
Configuration of infrastructure via code may help to ensure better consistency of the workloads provided that approved configurations are defined, and changes are checked prior to deployment.
OWASP’s secure cloud architecture guidelines call for risk analysis, threat modeling, attack surface evaluation, and secure design choices during cloud environment development.
6. Prepare for Incidents and Recovery
No matter how effective the preventive controls, it is impossible to ensure there will never be any incidents. Organizations must have an incident plan detailing what will occur in the event of suspicious activities or compromise.
The incident plan will include information about which groups are responsible, communication process, evidence handling, recovery priorities, etc. The groups must also regularly test the plan. An untested process could prove ineffective in an actual incident.
The process of recovery is highly dependent on effective backups and the procedure to restore the system. Organizations need to be aware of the order in which systems are recovered, how long the critical functions may go without being restored, and how security is established within the restored environment.
There needs to be a correlation between security and business continuity planning because there can be disruptions from both at the same time.
Making Cloud Security Part of Daily Operations
Cloud security effectiveness depends more on using the right controls rather than introducing additional ones. To start, businesses need to conduct cloud inventory, classify sensitive data, assign ownership, and check access controls.
Furthermore, teams can set up baseline configurations, log, track changes, backup test and constantly measure risk exposure. All those actions will be easier if security gets integrated into procurement, development, implementation, and onboarding activities rather than being an independent post-launch assessment process.
The beginning point is asking ourselves six pragmatic questions:
- What cloud services are we using, and what does it own?
- Who can access the sensitive information?
- In which configurations could the data be exposed or the services compromised?
- Do we log the important activities?
- How fast can we isolate a compromised account or workload?
- Can we recover critical operations after an incident?
These questions help turn a security goal into manageable actions. They also make it easier for technical and business teams to share responsibility for protecting cloud-based operations.
Conclusion
Cloud-based services can enable more flexibility in business processes, fast deployment, and scalability of business processes, but there is also a need for security to advance in step with these services. There is a need for understanding of the service model, managing identity, ensuring data security, monitoring, application security, and incident response planning.
The best way to go about the issue is to have an ongoing security management approach. This will involve regular review and adjustment of security control measures, depending on how workload, user, application, and integration requirements change.
FAQs
- What are cloud services and security practices?
Cloud Services and Cloud Security means the techniques, policies, processes, and controls that companies use to manage their cloud infrastructure in a way that is both secure and effective for their business needs.
- Why is identity management important in cloud environments?
Identity management determines which individuals have access to cloud services and what actions they can perform. With good authentication and minimum privilege, any harm that could be caused through compromised credentials can be minimized.
- How often should businesses review cloud security?
It is imperative that companies continually monitor and evaluate their cloud security measures. Permissions for access, configurations, logging procedures, backup strategies, and the security policies themselves should be reassessed any time there is a significant change in users, applications, or infrastructure.
- What should a business do first when improving cloud security?
Visibility comes first. Make a list of all the cloud services and information that require protection, find the responsible owners of such assets, examine privileged accounts, and understand key security roles.
