Three cattle were allegedly stolen from three houses in Ashabari village, along the India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura's Sepahijala district, on Saturday night. However, all the stolen animals were recovered later, local sources said.
The incident took place in Ward No. 5 of Ashabari gram panchayat, under the jurisdiction of Kalamchoura police station. The affected families were identified as those of Abdul Barek, Ruhun Nabi and Fazlu Rahman.
According to local sources, the families and villagers searched for the missing cattle throughout the night and managed to recover all three in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident has reignited concerns among some villagers over repeated thefts in the border area. They have also raised questions about surveillance along the international boundary.
Some villagers alleged that cattle thieves were taking advantage of inadequate border surveillance to steal livestock and attempt to smuggle the animals into Bangladesh. These allegations could not be independently verified.
Villagers also alleged that Mahabul Hossain, a resident of Rahimpur gram panchayat, might be involved in such thefts. Kalamchoura police detained him following the allegations, local sources said.
However, his alleged involvement in the cattle theft remains to be established through investigation. No further details about the circumstances of his detention or whether a formal case had been registered were immediately available.
The incident has prompted villagers to demand stronger surveillance along the border and legal action against those found responsible for the thefts.
