President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Friday formally declared open the National Assembly and the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) three-day retreat for the NASC top management of the National Assembly at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
The retreat is themed, “Strengthening Institutional Synergy, Administrative Effectiveness and Professional Service Delivery in the National Assembly.”
Represented by Senator Babangida Hussaini, the Senate President said the effectiveness of the National Assembly depended not only on the quality of its legislative and oversight functions but also on the efficiency of its administrative structures and the professionalism of its workforce.
He said the retreat provided an opportunity for participants to assess institutional challenges, improve coordination and develop practical strategies to enhance the performance of the National Assembly Service.
Akpabio stressed that institutional synergy was essential to achieving legislative excellence, noting that no department, directorate or agency could realise its full potential in isolation.
He therefore urged the management of the National Assembly and the NASC to deepen cooperation, improve coordination and pursue shared objectives in the interest of effective legislative administration.
“Administrative effectiveness requires us to embrace innovation, improve internal processes, promote accountability and ensure that institutional resources are deployed efficiently,” he said.
The Senate President also emphasised the need for discipline, integrity, competence and commitment to excellence in the delivery of professional legislative services.
He urged participants to engage constructively, exchange ideas and develop actionable resolutions capable of producing measurable and sustainable improvements in the National Assembly Service.
Akpabio said the quality of administrative support provided to the legislature must reflect the importance of its constitutional responsibilities and the expectations of Nigerians.
He further challenged participants to ensure that the retreat produced tangible changes rather than ending with discussions and resolutions.
“Let this retreat be more than an avenue for discussion. Let it mark a turning point towards stronger institutional governance, more efficient administrative processes and a renewed culture of professionalism and accountability,” he said.
According to him, the success of the retreat would be determined not by the number of resolutions adopted, but by the commitment of participants to translating them into practical and achievable results.
Akpabio assured the participants that he was closely following the proceedings and would look forward to receiving the resolutions and conclusions of the deliberations for consideration and implementation.
He expressed confidence that the retreat would strengthen institutional collaboration, enhance administrative efficiency and improve professional service delivery across the National Assembly.
The three-day retreat brings together key stakeholders in legislative administration to deliberate on institutional relationships, administrative processes and measures to improve the overall effectiveness of the National Assembly Service.
