Rest can look different for everyone. After a long day, it might mean taking a short walk, putting on a film or simply scrolling through your phone until you feel ready to call it a night. But even after eight hours of sleep or a quick afternoon nap, you can sometimes wake up feeling just as exhausted. That's because resting and actually feeling rested aren't always the same thing. With long working hours, packed schedules and the constant demands of everyday life, it's easy to overlook how mentally drained we are. So, what actually counts as rest when you're mentally tired? Here's what the experts have to say.
How to recognise when you need rest?
While falling sick with a cold or fever is a more obvious sign that your body needs rest, there are several other signs that we often overlook. "Persistent muscle stiffness, fatigue, mood changes, difficulty concentrating and disrupted sleep may all signal a need to slow down," says Ami Sethia, founder of Align by Ami.
She emphasises that rest goes beyond the absence of activity. It is also an opportunity for the body to recover, release accumulated tension and restore its energy.
What is mindful rest?
"Mindful rest involves intentionally creating space for recovery while becoming more attuned to your body's needs," says Sethia. She believes in balancing purposeful movement with stillness, helping you reconnect with your body and develop a more mindful approach to wellbeing.
Can physical rest relieve mental exhaustion?
"From a biopsychosocial perspective, our physical health, psychological wellbeing and social environment are deeply interconnected," shares Sethia. Intentional movement, stillness and breathwork can help regulate the nervous system, ease physical tension and improve our ability to manage stress.
How can you identify the type of rest you need?
We need different types of rest depending on what is leaving us feeling exhausted. Dr Vinod Sharma, mental wellness expert, memory and mnemonic trainer and founder of BrainyWood, explains some of the different types of rest we need and how to recognise when we need them.
Emotional rest
This is necessary when we constantly pretend to be fine despite feeling mentally drained or emotionally overwhelmed. Sharma suggests asking yourself whether you often suppress your own feelings to manage those of others. Making space to express how you really feel, whether to a trusted friend or a mental health professional, can help you work through this exhaustion.
Sensory rest
Constant notifications, increased screen time and spending most of the day looking at computer and phone screens can leave us feeling overstimulated. To give our senses a break, Sharma recommends switching off electronic devices, dimming the lights, putting our phone on ‘do not disturb’ or spending some time in silence or surrounded by nature. Making these small changes a regular habit can help reduce sensory overload.
Social rest
When social interactions, meetings and constant conversations begin to feel overwhelming, it may be a sign that you need social rest. Sharma suggests being more mindful about your social commitments, limiting interactions when necessary and prioritising the ones that feel meaningful.
Mental rest
Taking on too many responsibilities, multitasking and constantly worrying about getting everything done quickly and perfectly can leave the mind feeling exhausted. In such situations, activities like meditation and consciously prioritising tasks can help ease the mental load.
When do we get rest wrong?
One of the biggest misconceptions about rest is that watching television or scrolling through your phone counts as a mental break. While these activities may feel effortless, they still require cognitive processing and can keep the brain engaged with a constant stream of information.
Another common misconception is that rest simply means doing nothing physically. Sitting or lying down may help your body relax, but it does not necessarily mean that your mind has switched off. Similarly, screen time can feel like an easy way to unwind, but the constant flow of information can leave you feeling just as mentally stimulated.
"Treating rest as something you have to achieve can turn it into mental fatigue over a period of time," shares Sharma. Instead of making rest another task on your to-do list, it's important to understand what your mind and body actually need.
What actually counts as rest when you're mentally tired and how can you practise it daily?
Sethia suggests making time for regular reset breaks through screen-free moments, conscious breathing, gentle stretching and stillness. Equally important is setting aside dedicated time for self-care, allowing yourself to step away from everyday demands and focus on recovery. You don't need to wait until exhaustion sets in. Making rest a conscious and regular practice can help manage accumulated stress and support long-term wellbeing.
Alongside these small resets, a few everyday habits can also help prevent mental fatigue from building up. Sharma recommends maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night, avoiding late nights and taking short breaks during work to give your mind some time to recharge.
When is rest not enough?
"We can tell rest is not enough when consistent mental fatigue lasts for more than 15 days and there is no improvement even with sleep or with time," says Dr Sharma. He adds that it becomes a concern when the exhaustion starts affecting everyday activities, work or relationships. In some cases, prolonged mental fatigue may also be accompanied by anxiety, depression or alcohol dependence.
When rest alone does not help, seeking psychological support becomes important. Alongside professional treatment, developing healthier everyday habits such as going for morning walks, practising meditation, reading and spending time with positive and supportive people can also help improve overall wellbeing.
