Disney has spent years keeping its originals well away from Netflix, so the arrival of the first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians there on Oct. 4 is, at the very least, a departure. They’re only sticking around for three months, though, with season 3 landing on Disney+ on Nov. 20, right in the middle of that window.
It’s the clearest sign yet that streaming can be timed to the show rather than the service, and if you’re careful, you can even save a little money. If you’re already paying for Netflix, for example, this is about as close as Disney+ gets to a free trial, and with some planning, you’d only need to pay Disney for a single month.
What Disney is sending to Netflix
Titles like Percy Jackson are still on a short leash
The deal, announced on Oct. 2, puts Percy Jackson front and center, but it isn't the only title making the jump. All five Ice Age films arrived on Oct. 4 for their own three-month stint ahead of Ice Age: Boiling Point hitting theaters on Feb. 5, 2027, Will Trent joins Netflix on Nov. 3, and Soul, Elio, and Raya and the Last Dragon are all due in early 2027.
None of these titles are leaving Disney+ or Hulu, and Disney maintains that most of its branded movies and shows will stay exclusive to its own platforms. So Disney isn’t throwing open the vault, and I wouldn’t hold my breath for Marvel or Star Wars to follow.
What sets the Percy Jackson case apart is the timing, as Disney seems to be hoping to reach a bigger audience by putting the first two seasons in front of Netflix viewers just long enough for them to catch up before the new season arrives. Disney isn't the first to try this, either. Fox did much the same with Doc, putting season 2 on Netflix the same night season 3 premiered in September, and it's seemingly becoming standard practice for studios that want a new season to land with a bigger audience.
Why it's a free trial in all but name
Even if the trial runs on Disney's terms
Disney+ hasn't offered a free trial in the US in years (the only exception is the six months included with some Verizon Unlimited plans), and free trials have largely disappeared across major services, so bundles and carrier deals are now the main ways to get streaming services cheap or free. A three-month Netflix window does much the same work as a trial, just without Disney giving anything away on home ground.
If you're curious about the show, two full seasons are enough to decide, and Disney stands to gain a new group of viewers who catch up just as The Titan's Curse arrives. It’s still a trial, though, so it's designed to convert. Disney isn’t giving the show away (Netflix is presumably paying for the rights), and the hope is that you’ll catch up in October, subscribe in November, and then let the subscription roll on.
For anyone who isn’t on top of their renewal dates, that’s where this stops being a bargain, just adding another deadline to a Netflix library that’s increasingly made up of titles with an expiry date (start season 1 in late December, and you may not finish it), and with Disney+ raising prices again this autumn, every forgotten month costs a little more than the last.
How to time your Disney+ month
But a little patience goes a long way
Season 3 premieres on Nov. 20 with two episodes, then two more each week, according to the schedule shared at New York Comic Con. With eight episodes in total, that would put the finale on 11 December if the pattern holds, though Disney hasn’t confirmed a date. One billing cycle from the premiere would cover the lot, if all goes to plan. If it turns out to be one episode a week instead, the season would run into January, and you’d be into a second month.
I’d wait until the finale is out (or at least officially dated) before signing up, then cancel straight away after one month. You'll usually still have access until the end of the billing period, so you don’t need to rely on memory. If you're worried, a subscription-tracking app will help.
Disney+ with ads is going up to $12.49 a month (existing subscribers move to that price from 21 October), the latest in a long line of streaming price increases. The Disney+ and Hulu bundle with ads stays at $12.99, though, and if you’re only paying for one month, I’d go with the bundle and clear something off your Hulu watchlist while you’re at it. For 50 cents more, you get a second library for the same 30 days, so if there’s a Hulu or FX series you’ve been meaning to start (or someone else in the house has one), that’s two catch-ups for barely more than the price of one, assuming you actually get round to watching them.
If it's just you and Percy Jackson, the standalone plan does the job, but if you’re on the Standard with ads plan, Netflix says a small number of titles aren’t available with ads due to licensing restrictions, and those show a lock icon when you browse, so it’s worth checking the show’s page before you plan around it. Don’t expect downloads to extend your window, either, as offline downloads won’t outlast the title’s licensing deal.
The case for not waiting
The math still favors patience
Waiting until mid-December does mean missing out on three weeks of fan theories, reaction posts, and a group chat that’s already moved on to the next thing, of course. If watching week to week is half the fun for you, subscribing on 20 November is a good option, and if the two-a-week schedule holds, you’ll likely still only pay for a single month. This approach only really works if you’re already paying for Netflix, though, so I’d think twice if you’re signing up just for Percy Jackson.
Disney+ Premium at $21.49 might suit a household that watches year-round, but for a single show it’s a harder sell, since, like most premium streaming plans, it rarely feels worth the money unless you’re making the most of it. But even in the worst-case scenario, you’re still better off than you were a month ago, when catching up meant paying Disney for two seasons up front.
None of this is new behavior, really, as plenty of people already subscribe and churn out again as they need to, and the studios have known that for years. The difference now is that Disney is giving you the catch-up for free, but only if you’re quick. Percy Jackson's Netflix window closes in early January (the exact date will appear on Netflix's "Last day to watch" label closer to the time), so if you're starting with season 1, this is as good a time as any to begin.
And with more Disney titles coming to Netflix next year, its coming-soon list could become the most useful Disney+ planner you've got.
