The Independent Electoral Commission has been confronted with supplementary registration of voters prior to the December 2026 presidential election. It is trite law that after every registration of voters the lists of registered voters must be displayed in public places for scrutiny by other registered voters. Objections are made that must be put before a revising court for processing. After the revising courts end their determination, a master register is prepared. It is this master register that must contain all the names that are included in the register of voters.
As Gambians prepare for elections nomination papers must be picked up from the IEC and filled by those who wish to nominate them. The Constitution requires presidential aspirants seeking nomination to be nominated by no less than 5000 voters. At least 200 registered voters must come from each of the seven regions of the country. This process of nomination is the exercise that should be taking place prior to nominations of candidates.
It is unfortunate that controversy has emerged at this crucial time just few weeks before the commencement of nomination. It is therefore important for voter education, prior, during and after election is conducted to enable the Gambian people to know what a legitimate or illegitimate electoral conduct is. The monitors are waiting and the die will soon be cast.
Foroyaa will continue to intensify its monitoring of the electoral environment to keep its readership aligned with the realities on the ground.
