On this day, StepFun promises an open-weight release for its Step-5 model. Simultaneously, Anthropic’s own deprecations page names the earliest Haiku 4.5 could leave its platforms: a tentative floor, not a scheduled shutdown, on a model the same page still lists Active. These dates remain directional rather than contractual, forcing deployers to navigate shifting ground without the certainty of a fixed regulatory schedule.
The collision of these events pits open weights without terms against a price floor whose old entry tier is closing. One path involves a managed migration with established documentation. The other involves a high-stakes promise regarding model availability where the commercial rules do not exist. Deployers face a moment where technical planning meets vendor-led uncertainty as both companies move the ground under their feet on the same day.
The Anthropic migration path
Anthropic manages its model lifecycle through a model deprecations page that currently lists Claude Haiku 4.5 as active. The page gives no scheduled dark date, only the floor: “Not sooner than October 15, 2026,” and the model lacks a formal deprecation entry or a named replacement. This contrasts with the process for Claude Sonnet 4.5, which included a clear retirement timeline and a designated successor. Anthropic notes that “The dates on this page apply to Anthropic-operated platforms: the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, and Microsoft Foundry. Partner-operated platforms (Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud) set their own retirement schedules.”
Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026, positioning it as the successor for high-volume, cost-sensitive tasks. The new model offers significant price reductions. Anthropic states the model is “priced 90% lower than Claude Haiku 4.5 for requests up to 100,000 tokens, and 50% lower for requests over 100,000 tokens. On Haiku 4.5, 90% of requests fell into the former category.” The pricing table shows Haiku 5.5 output costs at $0.50 per million tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens and $2.50 above that, compared to $5.00 for Haiku 4.5. Notably, Haiku 4.5 remains listed for sale today in the legacy models table at $1 input and $5 output per million tokens.
Teams migrating to Haiku 5.5 face a transition that includes a migration guide and vendor-published customer evidence. Companies like AlphaSense, which handles about 8 million calls a week on its “Ask in Document” feature, measured Haiku 5.5 at 0.84 versus Haiku 4.5 at 0.76 over 400 queries. Box reports 11 points higher performance than 4.5 at about half the latency. These remain vendor-published statements rather than independent audits. Anthropic commits to at least 60 days of notice before retiring publicly released models. Because requests to retired models will fail, the October 15 date acts as a signal for potential action rather than an immediate shutdown.
The StepFun promise
StepFun presents a different set of variables. StepFun’s own homepage countdown for the Step-5 preview points toward October 15. This follows a September 20 announcement where the company stated it would release BF16 open-weights on this day. The model is a 600B-total, 27B-active Mixture of Experts system. It requires roughly 1.2 TB of GPU memory for BF16 inference.
The primary challenge for deployers is the lack of contractual clarity regarding the release. As detailed in our Step-5 licensing report, the promised weights lack an official staging area, and license terms remain unpublished. The model has been available via OpenRouter since October 8, but the open-weight release remains a promise rather than a confirmed delivery. For enterprise teams, the October 15 date provides a test of whether StepFun publishes an official license on its own channels.
October 15 tests two distinct vendor behaviors. On the Anthropic side, the date reveals whether the formal deprecation process begins for Haiku 4.5 or if the model remains active past the floor date. On the StepFun side, the date determines if the promised weights arrive with an official license. Deployers must decide how to allocate resources between a managed migration and a speculative adoption, knowing that both vendors set the pace on their own terms.
