Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical and Biological Engineering Scholarship Benefits
The University of British Columbia (UBC) guarantees a minimum funding package of CAD 40,000 per year to eligible full-time PhD students at its Vancouver campus. The university provides this financial support for the first four years of doctoral study, bringing the minimum total funding to CAD 160,000 over four years.
The funding package combines financial support from university scholarships, external awards, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Students receive funding through one or more of these sources, depending on their departmental arrangements and available opportunities.
International students can also qualify for UBC’s International Tuition Award, which provides up to CAD 3,200 annually to help offset tuition expenses.
The funding supports students as they pursue advanced research in biotechnology, chemical processes, energy, materials, and environmental engineering. The CAD 40,000 represents the total minimum annual funding package rather than an additional scholarship payment.
Tuition Fees and Additional Financial Assistance
UBC charges tuition fees for the Chemical and Biological Engineering PhD program. The university’s published first-year tuition amounts are CAD 10,081.65 for international students and CAD 5,738.52 for domestic students.
Eligible international doctoral students can receive an International Tuition Award worth up to CAD 3,200 per year. UBC automatically considers qualifying students for this award after they enrol in an eligible research-based program.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must satisfy the University of British Columbia’s general doctoral admission requirements and any additional conditions set by the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
Candidates generally need a recognised master’s degree or equivalent academic preparation suitable for doctoral research. UBC normally expects applicants to have a minimum academic average in the B+ range, approximately 76% under its grading system.
Pakistani applicants must meet UBC’s country-specific doctoral admission requirements. The university recognises relevant master’s degrees, M.Phil. degrees and master’s honours qualifications with first-class or first-division academic standing.
Candidates should also demonstrate research interests related to chemical and biological engineering. Their academic background must support advanced research in the department’s areas of specialisation.
Required Documents for the Scholarship Application
Candidates must prepare the relevant academic and supporting documents before applying to UBC.
Applicants need academic transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions and contact details for three referees. UBC collects recommendation letters through its graduate application system.
Candidates should also prepare information about their research interests and identify potential faculty supervisors.
The department encourages applicants to explore faculty research profiles and contact relevant researchers before applying.
How to Apply
Interested candidates must apply through the University of British Columbia’s official graduate admissions system.
Applicants should first review the official Chemical and Biological Engineering PhD program page to confirm the admission requirements and available intakes.
Candidates must then create a UBC Campus-Wide Login account, select their preferred admission intake and complete the online application. The application requires academic information, referee details and information about the applicant’s intended research.
UBC encourages candidates to identify potential supervisors whose research interests match their proposed projects. However, applicants do not need to secure a supervisor’s commitment before submitting their applications.
The university currently lists an application fee of CAD 168.25 for international applicants. Candidates must pay the applicable fee and submit their applications before the relevant closing date.
