Kwagga Smith has parted ways with Japanese club Shizuoka Blue Revs by mutual agreement after eight years, fuelling speculation about a possible return to South African rugby. The 32-year-old Springbok loose forward is now free to explore his next move, with the Bulls previously confirming their interest in signing him.
The Blue Revs announced Smith's departure on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, paying tribute to a player who became one of the club's most influential figures during his time in Japan.
Kwagga Smith leaves Shizuoka Blue Revs after 8 years
Smith joined the Japanese outfit, then known as Yamaha Júbilo, in 2018. He went on to establish himself as a leading player in Japan's domestic competition and earned five selections in the league's Team of the Season.
He was also named League One Player of the Season for the 2022-23 campaign.
In its farewell statement, the Blue Revs praised his leadership and contribution to the club.
“With 63 Test caps for South Africa, Smith brought a wealth of experience and an impressive track record to the team. He consistently led by example and served as a role model for his teammates,” the club said.
The club added that Smith had helped shape its history and wished him success in the next chapter of his career.
Bulls interest puts Springbok return in focus
Bulls coach Johan Ackermann confirmed last month that the Pretoria-based franchise was interested in signing Smith and fellow Springbok Malcolm Marx.
Smith previously played under Ackermann at the Lions before moving to Japan. A reunion could offer the loose forward a familiar environment if the Bulls secure his signature.
However, the end of his Japanese contract does not confirm that he will join the Pretoria side.
Kwagga Smith's injury adds another factor
Smith has also been dealing with a knee injury that kept him out of the Springboks' international season to date.
His next destination and recovery timeline remain important questions as speculation over a South African return continues.
Kwagga Smith explains the Springboks' growing battle for places
Briefly News previously reported that Kwagga Smith believes no Springbok can take their place in the national team for granted under head coach Rassie Erasmus.
The injured loose forward praised the younger players pushing for selection and said competition within the squad was helping raise standards.
