A Kano-based tailor, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has begun a 120-hour non-stop sewing marathon in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.
Basari, Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, began the five-day challenge on Wednesday, October 7, and is expected to conclude it on Monday night, October 12, 2026.
The record attempt is taking place at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano.
In a video shared across his social media platforms on October 1, Basari announced the initiative, tagged Sew for the Nation, describing it as an opportunity to combine a record-breaking challenge with support for education and disadvantaged children.
Basari said: “My name is Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, I’m the CEO of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited. I am here to announce Sew for the Nation, a Guinness World Record attempt.”
He explained that the challenge would involve sewing continuously for 120 hours while producing school uniforms for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in public schools.

He said: “Because I’ll be sewing school uniforms to support the less privileged pupils at the public schools.”
Basari said the initiative was designed to go beyond achieving a personal milestone by using creativity, resilience and vocational skills to contribute to education and community development.
He added: “This is more than a record, this is for every dreamer, every artisan and every young Nigerian with a vision.”

The tailor also invited members of the public to support the initiative.
Basari is seeking to surpass the existing record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, reportedly achieved by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025.
His attempt will be subject to verification by Guinness World Records before any new record can be officially recognised.
