Marvel gave Daredevil fans almost everything they wanted at New York Comic Con 2026: the return of Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, a long-awaited Defenders reunion and a first look at an explosive new season. Then came the announcement that turned the cheers into boos, and ended with a hard task that feels like a lot of homework.
During Marvel Television's presentation at Manhattan's Javits Center this weekend, the studio confirmed that the third season of Daredevil: Born Again, scheduled for March 2027 on Disney+, will be its last.
The reaction was immediate. Fans booed the announcement, and Charlie Cox, who has played Matt Murdock for more than a decade, responded with a joke that could become another headache for Marvel. "Wait, what?" Cox said, pretending to be surprised by the news.
He then raised the possibility of another fan campaign to save the series. "All I'll say is, I imagine the 'Save Daredevil' campaign will be gearing up for round two," the actor said during red carpet interviews.
The Defenders are finally back
Cox was joined onstage by Krysten Ritter, who plays Jessica Jones, and Finn Jones, who portrays Danny Rand/Iron Fist. Although Mike Colter was absent, Marvel confirmed that his character, Luke Cage, will also return after his cameo at the end of season 2.
The reunion brings all four original Defenders together for the first time since their 2017 Netflix crossover series.
Exclusive footage screened at Comic Con showed Matt Murdock behind bars following his confrontation with Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D'Onofrio. The preview also featured Bullseye and scenes involving the reunited heroes. For longtime Marvel television fans, the footage offered a glimpse of a reunion nearly a decade in the making. But the announcement that the upcoming season would conclude the series overshadowed some of the excitement.
Could fans save Daredevil again?
The original Daredevil series ended on Netflix in 2018 after three seasons, prompting fans to organize a campaign demanding its return.
Cox eventually reprised his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, before headlining Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. Now, the actor's comments at Comic Con have revived discussion about whether fans could persuade Marvel to extend the show once again.
The decision to end Born Again was first reported in September, alongside news that showrunner Dario Scardapane would not return after the third season.
Marvel has not announced a fourth season or a continuation of the Defenders storyline beyond the upcoming episodes. The conclusion of Born Again also does not necessarily mean Cox or the other actors are finished playing their characters elsewhere in the MCU.
For now, Marvel is preparing to deliver the Defenders reunion fans have waited years to see, while facing renewed pressure from an audience that has already helped bring Daredevil back once.
And judging by the reaction at New York Comic Con, some fans are not ready to say goodbye again.
