Rumors of a supposed beef between star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum and now- Philadelphia 76ers forward Jaylen Brown are nothing new under the sun. But a recent documentary video release by Tatum and social media comment on it by Brown have breathed new life into this tired narrative. In that video, Tatum talks about the Georgia native being dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers, and his surprise at the move when he learned Brown was being dealt to a division rival.
"(Celtics assistant coach God Shammgod, Jr.) handed me a towel," said Tatum in said video. "He was like, 'Yo, put this over your face. Don't react. They just traded him.' I'm like, 'Oh, shit.' I'm like, 'Where?' He said, 'Philly.' I said, 'You traded him down the street?' So I was just as much caught off guard as the rest of the world."
Brown, evidently, took issue with at least some of this take, commenting on social media with an emoji of a hat to signify (assumedly) he was calling 'cap' on those words – slang for untrue for the olds among us.
This stands in contrasts to the considerable lengths that Tatum has gone since the trade went down to make it clear he bears no ill will toward his former teammate, even going as far as to praise his tenure with Boston and the impact it had on his own career.
Something else, it appears, is simmering on the other side of this well-worn narrative. Perhaps, however, this time it actually has teeth.
