Despite LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers opening their highly anticipated season by defeating the defending champion New York Knicks 106-100 on Tuesday, his pregame actions garnered criticism. Clay Travis, founder of the conservative sports outlet OutKick, called out James, who is known for his pregame rituals, on social media for seemingly practicing his golf swing or stretching while the U.S. anthem played.
On Thursday, Travis shared a clip on X and wrote:
“LeBron decided to practice his golf swing during the national anthem last night. I can’t wait until he retires, he’s been toxic for the entire NBA.”
James has caught the golf bug and is often seen enjoying sessions of the game with friends and fellow players. Even PGA Tour players talked about his swing and praised him for his athletic ability.
The four-time NBA champion contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, along with a steal and a block. Tyrese Maxey led the offense with 28 points, four rebounds and five assists in 40 minutes.
President Donald Trump criticizes LeBron James for his golf antics
Even President Donald Trump chimed in with his thoughts on LeBron James’ pregame actions. On his social media platform, Truth Social, POTUS wrote:
“While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country! … LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag.”
The 76ers have begun the season as expected, with Tyrese Maxey leading the star-studded lineup. Fans are excited to see the journey Philly will have this season.
