Phil Mphela, popularly known as Kgopolo on X, has escalated his public criticism of American televangelist Benny Hinn, returning to the platform with a second blistering post that pulls no punches.
The entertainment commentator first went after Hinn after a South African public figure appeared to be promoting the pastor's ministry. In that initial post, Mphela wrote:
"This man destroyed lives. Stole from vulnerable people to enrich himself. We have well documented a life of fraud and prosperity gospel gifting. Even his own family members have exposed his evil ways to exploit the poor and desperate. Mpho, do not lead your own people to this man."
Mphela's full accusations against Benny Hinn
A day later, on 23 October 2026, Mphela posted again, this time laying out a more detailed case against Hinn. In the second post, he wrote:
"Benny Hinn is a fraud, scammer and a charlatan! To judge him for his lies and grifting is not to judge all Christians. The man lied about his own father and origin story. He stole from the poor. His own nephew exposed how they would fake miracles at his church and pressure congregants to give them money. South Africa ... Africa... doesn't need criminals like him to exploit our people in the name of God. We have enough of those imposters here already."
Mphela was careful to draw a distinction between his criticism of Hinn specifically and any broader attack on Christianity as a faith, a point that seemed intended to pre-empt backlash from believers.
X users weigh in on the debate
The posts stirred up considerable conversation online. Some users backed Mphela's position, while others questioned the tone of his comments.
Themba offered a pointed social observation:
"You go to the beach uyogeza, and no one judges you. You visit a sangoma who tells you lies about winning the Lotto, and no one judges you. You see Muslims closing their shops between 12 and 1 PM to pray, and you keep quiet. The funny part? You even wait for them during that same..."
@lkmalele came out in agreement with Mphela:
"Unfortunately or fortunately, I have to agree with Phil here; the Christian community don't need these kinds of preachers. Speak the truth, preach the Gospel and let God do the rest."
Hagiosman kept it brief:
"Lool…may God 4give you."
