Newcastle United have plenty to address after a difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, with Matthias Jaissle still working to establish his preferred style following his appointment in August.
The Magpies have struggled for consistency, collecting two wins, two draws and three defeats across their opening seven league matches. Three defeats in their last four outings have increased the pressure on Jaissle to find answers, particularly in central midfield.
Summer recruitment brought significant changes to the squad, including Nico González, whose £50 million arrival from Manchester City added another option in the middle of the park. However, Newcastle still need a midfielder who can dictate possession, resist opposition pressure and move the ball forward with greater control.
Bruno Guimarães’ departure to Arsenal for a reported £75 million fee has left a sizeable gap in Newcastle’s midfield. Joelinton offers physical strength, while Joe Willock brings forward runs and attacking threat, but Jaissle needs greater technical quality to support his pressing system.
That requirement has brought an established Premier League performer back into the club’s transfer thinking.
Newcastle United unlikely to win race for Yasin Ayari
According to an exclusive report by Mick Brown in Football Insider, Newcastle United could miss out on Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Yasin Ayari whose valuation is between €45 and €50 million as the Seagulls step up efforts to secure his future.
The 23-year-old Sweden international has attracted interest from Newcastle since before the summer transfer window. His contract situation initially offered the Magpies a potential opportunity, with his current agreement due to expire in June 2027.
However, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Brighton remain confident of reaching an agreement with the midfielder, who is reportedly happy at the club and willing to sign fresh terms.
Ayari has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season under Fabian Hürzeler. His performance against Crystal Palace, including a goal during Brighton’s 5-0 victory, further demonstrated his value to the side.
Brighton can trigger an additional year on his existing contract, providing protection against a free transfer departure. The club are keen to secure a longer agreement before January, which could leave Newcastle searching elsewhere.
Should Newcastle United push harder to sign Ayari?

Newcastle should explore a January deal before Brighton settle Ayari’s future, but the club must approach negotiations with a clear financial limit.
The Swedish midfielder offers qualities Newcastle currently lack. His composure in possession, ability to receive the ball under pressure and willingness to carry it through midfield could help Jaissle build attacks with greater purpose.
However, Brighton have little reason to accept a reduced fee if their contract extension option remains available. Newcastle must therefore assess whether a January bid offers genuine value rather than pursuing Ayari simply because his contract appears vulnerable.
Missing out would hurt, particularly after Guimarães’ departure, but Newcastle should have alternative targets ready. A technically gifted midfielder remains a priority, and recruitment must address that need without compromising the club’s wider financial plans.
If Brighton secure Ayari on fresh terms, Newcastle will need to move quickly on another suitable option. Jaissle cannot afford another transfer window in which his midfield lacks the composure and passing quality his system demands.
